TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS Business and You Have you ever thought about own ing your own business? If you have, you aren’t alone. Each year, the number of new small businesses opening in the United States continues to grow. Although many new businesses fail within their first five years of operation, many succeed and develop into profitable enterprises. Why do most people want to own their own business? The reasons vary with each individual, but many entre preneurs are attracted to business ownership because they are tired of working for someone else. Others hope to increase their earning potential. In reality, being in business for yourself may present unexpected chal lenges, including financial instability and long, hard hours of work. But for many new business owners, the chal lenge of making their own choices and becoming successful far outweighs the problems they may encounter Here are some characteristics many “successful” business owners share. They include: • • • • • Good People Skills - Able to deal effectively with people Problem Resolution - Able to suc cessfully resolve problems with customers and employees Positive Attitude - Able to focus on the positive instead of the negative Self-Motivated - Able to work without supervision Goal Oriented - Able to focus on and achieve goals For additional business informa tion, contact Rosie Sufficool, business information counselor at the Siletz Tribal Business Corporation, at 541-994-2142. r I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I Include Your Company in Tribal Business Directory Most Often Requested Telephone Numbers Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians Salem Area Office Salem Finance Office Portland Area Office Eugene Area Office Springfield Siletz Tribal Head Start Contract Health Services (CHS) Siletz Community Health Clinic Siletz Alcohol and Drug Chinook Winds Casino Resort Chemawa Health Clinic Bureau of Indian Affairs 1-800-922-1399 503-390-9494 1-888-870-9051 503-238-1512 541-484-4234 541-747-0161 1-800-628-5720 1-800-648-0449 1-800-600-5599 1-888-244-6665 1-800-452-7823 1-8OO-323-8517 Are you a Siletz Tribal member who owns your own business? If you are, we would like to hear from you. The Siletz Tribal Business Corpo ration is developing a directory of busi nesses owned by Siletz Tribal members. When completed, the directory will be available for Siletz Tribal members to use when they need a particular ser vice or product and would like to sup port a tribal business. Cut Wood for the Elders Day The tribal Natural Resources Com mittee and Natural Resources Depart ment will sponsor a “Cut Wood for the Elders Day” on April 2. The woodcut will be held at the old log yard on the tribe’s Toledo Mill Property. We need lots of volunteers to help cut and split firewood for tribal el ders. Bring your chainsaws, split ting mauls, axes, hydraulic splitters, and lots of energy. Even if you don’t have any of those, we can use the moral support! Lunch, drinks, and snacks will be provided. We will meet at the Siletz Tribal ad ministration build ing at 7:30 a.m. and caravan to the mill. For anyone wishing to come later, directions to the mill will be posted on the front door of the building. The goal of this event will be to stockpile firewood for future delivery to elders, particularly those who have not yet been served this season. We have a long list of elders who have not re ceived any wood yet this season. People willing to haul firewood to elders outside of the Siletz area should contact Elders Coordina tor Angela Ramirez at 541-444-8225 or 1-800-922-1399, ext. 1225 and she will pair you up with an el der in need. We espe cially need folks who can haul wood to the Eugene, Salem, and Portland areas. Previous wood cuts have seen more . elders showing up to work than young folks! This is a chal- lenge to all you “youngsters” (in body and/or spirit) out there to come out and show your respect for the elders by providing them with the means to keep warm during the cold months.
