NOTICES CPB Awards Grant To Help Establish Indian Radio Center WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Cor poration for Public Broadcasting re cently announced a $1.5 million grant to establish the Center for Native Ameri can Radio, a centralized service bureau that will provide technical, fund-raising, and program support to nearly 30 pub lic radio stations serving Indian listeners. “Native radio stations provide vi tal programs and services to some of our nation’s poorest and most isolated communities,” said Kathleen Cox, CPB president and CEO. “Listeners depend on these stations to cover national and local news, deal with community is sues, and create links across geographic and tribal boundaries. “This service exemplifies public broadcasting’s mission - as set out in the Public Broadcasting Act - to serve unserved and underserved audiences, and CPB is proud to support it.” The National Federation of Com munity Broadcasters (NFCB) will over see the center’s organization and operation, which also will be guided by an advisory board of Native American station and community leaders. The center will seek non-traditional funding sources to aid the coalition of Native stations, which serve communi ties from the Alaskan tundra to the Ari zona pueblo to Native Americans in America’s biggest cities. In addition to fund-raising, the center will provide expertise on accounting, engineering, programming, and other forms of tech nical assistance that small stations need to operate. With this funding announcement, CPB is implementing the recommen dations of its Native American Radio Assessment, conducted earlier this year. The NFCB funding proposal grew out of a two-day Native American public radio meeting held last April and cor responds with findings of the CPB study. Through the center’s work, CPB, NFCB, and Native stations around the country will work to improve effective ness and efficiency of station operations so that listeners will benefit. “The center will play an important role in seeing that unserved Native au diences have access to Native pro grams,” said Jacqlyn Salee, president Gates Millennium Scholarship Applications Available Applications for the 2004-2005 Gates Millennium Scholarships are available at www.gmsp.org or www.aigc.com. The deadline to apply is Jan. 14, 2005. These scholarships are awarded to students who: • • • • • Are American Indian/Alaska Na tive (federally or state recognized), African American, Asian/Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American Entered a nationally accredited col lege or university as a full-time freshman in the fall of 2004 Will graduate from high school with a cumulative 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale or earn a GED Meet the federal Pell Grant eligi bility criteria (financial need) Demonstrate leadership abilities through participating in community service, extracurricular, or other activities nominee, nominator, and recommender. Each student (nominee) is required to provide a completed nominee personal information form. Nominators are principals, teach ers, guidance counselors, higher edu cation representatives, and other professional educators who can nomi nate students with outstanding aca demic qualifications, particularly those likely to succeed in the fields of math ematics, science, engineering, educa tion, or library science. Recommenders are any adults who are familiar with the nominee’s com munity service and leadership activities. Forms for both nominators and recommenders are available at the Web sites listed above. Washakie Willamette Master Chorus Announces Season The 2004-2005 Willamette Master Chorus begins its 20,h year with our first concert Nov. 21, a collaboration with the Salem Chamber Orchestra. We will perform the Sacred Service by the emi nent American composer Ernest Bloch. On Dec. 18-19, we will offer Conrad Susa’s Carols and Lullabies and Ariel’s Navidad Nuestra, both sung in Span ish with guitar, harp, and percussion. Portland duo Scott Kritzer, guitar, and Janet Chvatal, soprano, will join us along with the Pringle Singers from Pringle Elementary School, Rachel Babbs, conductor. Christmas carols with the orchestra also will be included. Scott and Janet have invited us to perform with them at Portland Center Stage on Dec. 27. We will travel to the Mount Angel Abbey on May 1 and May 8 to present the Solemn Mass by Louis Vieme for two organs along with Dona Nobis Pacem by Ralph Vaughan Williams with or chestra.
