TRIBAL MEMBER NEWS Downey Elected ASOSU President Kristen Downey, a senior at Oregon State University, was elected to the top position of ASOSU president in the recent general election held on campus. She is the first Native American woman to be elected to this office at OSU Kristen has been involved in ASOSU (Associated Students of Oregon State University) for the past two years and currently serves as its executive secretary. The primary purpose of ASOSU is to promote self governance in the best interest of students at Oregon State and Kristen is looking forward to leading this effort in the coming academic year. Kristen also has been selected as an intern to the 2004 Scholars Program establish by the Kaiser Family Foun dation to honor the legacy of the late U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Jordan. This nine-week program is designed to expand the pool of students of color interested in the field of health policy while further developing their critical thinking and leadership skills. Kristen joined 15 other students who were selected from 900 national applicants in Washington, D.C., in late May, where they began their internships working in congressional offices and learning about health policy. Kristen is looking forward to working directly with the office of Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon while in Washington, D.C.
