Craig was bom March 6, 1959, to Betty Whitehead and the late Paul Whitehead Sr., in Spokane, Wash. He was a member of the Confeder ated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon and the Ktunaxa Nations St. Mary’s Indian Band of Cranbrook, B.C., Canada. Craig Whitehead addresses the crowd at the start of Run to the Rogue in 2003. Craig was the whipman for the Siletz Tribe for nearly 10 years. In addition to his whipman duties, he was the pow wow coordinator for the tribe. He also served on the Education and Cultural Resources committees. Craig served as the coordinator of the Siletz Dancers, a tribal group that gave dance demonstrations at schools, county fairs, and other events through out western Oregon. Craig was active in the local Siletz community. In 2003, he became the president of the school board for Siletz Valley School, a public charter school in Siletz for children in grades K-8. He also coached T-ball for several years. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Whitehead Sr.; sister, Linda Whitehead-King; and brother, Paul Whitehead Jr. Craig is survived by his wife, Kris; sons, San Poil and William; daughter, Kateri; his mother, Betty, and com panion, Zack Smith of Siletz; brothers, Stuart Whitehead of Sunnyside, Wash., and Tony Whitehead of Siletz; sisters, Peggy Medina of Eddyville, Ore., and Tami Miner of Siletz; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services were held May 13 at the Siletz Tribal Community Center. Interment was at the Paul Washington Cemetery in Siletz. He was bom Nov. 25, 1947, to Mary (Rilatos) and John Amogelar Marzan. He attended Reedley Junior College in Reedley, Calif., for two years. He served in the U.S. Army for two years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing softball, and was a member of the Siletz Tribal softball team. Benny was best known for his love of sports, children, and most of all, his sense of humor. He left an indelible mark on all our hearts. Survivors include a son, Donald, of Newport, Ore.; three brothers, John Marzan of Fresno, Calif., Kelly Marzan of Orange Cove, Calif., and Jerry Marzan of Siletz; a sister, Lisa Williamson of Sacramento, Calif.; two nephews, Jerome Marzan of Orange Cove and John Williamson of Sacramento,; six nieces, Monica Galo and Marissa Marzan, both of Fresno, Ashley Marzan and Tiffany Marzan, both of Reedley, Teala Rilatos of Siletz, and Brianna Marzan of Orange Cove,; and two great-nieces, Manny Galo and Mikayla Galo, both of Fresno. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Danny Rilatos and Robie Smith. Services were held May 14 at the Siletz Tribal Community Center. Interment was at the Paul Washington Cemetery in Siletz.
