Second Annual Beach Ball Benefits CASA Lincoln County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) will once again host its annual fund-raiser, the Beach Ball, at Chinook Winds Casino on May 22 from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. This is CASA’s second year of providing a fun evening of great music and dancing on the Oregon Coast. For those who attended last year, check out the Web site http://webpages. charter.net/casabeachball/ to see if your dance moves are there! Those who didn’t attend might enjoy browsing to see last year’s fun and some of what’s in store this year as well! The evening will again feature the Newport High School Stage Band, under the direction of Darrel Meisen- heimer. The students will perform for the first hour of the event and you won’t want to miss any of their superb sounds. Chicago’s Own Burgie Crandall and His Let’s Dance Band will take the stage following the NHS band and play for the remainder of the evening. Many of you may be familiar with Burgie Crandall and his musicians from the Tigard area. The Beach Ball is proud to bring this wonderful group of musicians to the coast through the sponsorship of West Coast Bank. The event will feature a “Taste of the Oregon Coast’’ buffet, door prizes, and a silent auction with original artwork from coastal artists and donations from hotels, restaurants, and B&Bs. Dress for the evening will once again be “formal beach attire,” with prizes awarded for the “creativity” and “individuality” shown by dancers’ interpretations of the term. Come dressed as you like to dance! Lincoln County CASA’s focus in presenting the Beach Ball is to provide a fun, lighthearted evening of dance, food, and friendship, while raising money for a very serious cause. Our corporate sponsors - including Western Title & Escrow Company, which covers our printing needs, and Umpqua Bank, which supports us with staff, donations, and equipment - will help make this year’s event even better than Beach Ball 2003! 28 □ Siletz News □ We’re also pleased that The Glass Slipper and Shirley Howard once again will join us with her beautiful display of dance shoes, wraps, and accessories available for sale. Shirley has offered to donate a portion of any proceeds from the evening’s sales to the CASA program. CASA is a national organization created in 1977 to serve the needs of children placed in state custody. As children move through the system, they’re likely to meet several workers who will come and go. A CASA volunteer may be the only person who remains constant during this difficult time. CASA volunteers make a commit ment to follow the child’s care until he or she is placed in a safe, secure permanent home. This may be a period of a few months or several years. CASA volunteers come from all walks of life and undergo training to learn how best to work with the court system, write reports, interview those involved in the child’s life, and work one-on-one with the child. This fund raiser will help support these volunteers through additional training and by allowing Lincoln County CASA to help cover some volunteer expenses, such as phone cards and required travel to work the child’s case. We invite you to attend this great evening designed with you, our dance community, in mind. We’ll provide a 24’ x 57’ dance floor, so there will be plenty of room to move. Tickets are $35 per person, $60 per couple, and $240 per table of eight. They’re available by mailing your check to Lincoln County CASA, PO Box 707, Newport, OR 97365. Mail-order ticket deadline is May 10, 2004. Your tickets will be mailed to you with an area visitor’s guide. Or you can contact us by phone at 541-265-3116 or via e-mail at beachball 1 @charter.net for additional information. Special lodging packages are offered for out-of-town guests through Surftides Inn at 1-800-452-2159 and Liberty Inn at 1-877-994-1777. Shuttle service to the event is available from both hotels. May 2004 Deadline Extended for Miss Native American Oregon Pageant Applications are available for contestants in the second annual Miss Native American Oregon pageant, which will take place on Aug. 21,2004, at Chinook Winds Casino & Conven tion Center. Those interested in entering the pageant should contact Dixie Lorange at 541-996-2826. This event provides scholarships to young ladies who are enrolled members of federally recognized tribes and residents of the state of Oregon. The winner will be eligible to compete for the title of Miss Oregon 2005 in Seaside, Ore., in July 2005, with the ultimate goal of competing for the title of Miss America 2006 in September 2005 in Atlantic City, N.J. Since capturing the crown, last year’s winner and the very first Miss Native American Oregon, Apollonia Lane, has had a busy year. She has spoken on tobacco prevention (her forum) to local elementary schoolchildren, in Boston at the National Conference on Tobacco and Health, and before the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in Minneapolis/St. Paul. During this time, she’s been studying human services with a focus on addiction studies at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Ore. Apollonia is a member of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon. Many young women dream of scholarships to help pay for college. Every year, the Miss Oregon Scholarship Program offers to its contestants more than $100,000 in cash and in-kind tuition scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to any competitor, not just the ultimate titleholder. Scholarships are available for academic achieve ment, community service, talent, fitness, speaking skills, and more.
