In October 2003, Rob Bovett, assistant county counsel for Lincoln County, contacted the Cultural Programs office to notify us that the county had recently acquired a small parcel that includes most of Medicine Rock itself through tax foreclosure. It was originally on a list of properties to be auctioned by the county, but because of its cultural importance, it was being withdrawn from that list if the tribe expressed an interest in it. Accordingly, I notified the Siletz Tribal Council of the situation and a letter was sent to the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners requesting that they consider turning title to that parcel back to the Siletz Tribe. On Dec. 12,2003,1 received a packet from Rob notifying me that the county commissioners had voted on Nov. 26 to return Medicine Rock to our tribe. Also included in the packet was the original quitclaim deed signed by the commissioners - Jean Cowan, chair, Don Lindley, and Terry N. Thompson. Many thanks should go to Rob and our county commissioners for taking this important action. Our Cultural Programs staff and Cultural Committee have discussed the planning of a procession past Medicine Rock this spring or summer (by canoe, raft, tube, or whatever) to give all participating a chance to leave a small offering at the waterline as our ancestors did, and sharing with our youth the tradition of making wishes for safe passage and good luck in the future. Notice of the procession will be published in Siletz News, so all can plan to attend.
