TRIBAL MEMBER NEWS Spring Basketball Tournament Again a Success by Shannon Case The Siletz Residents Organization hosted its Fourth Annual Spring Basketball Tournament in March. Teams traveled from Washington and California, representing the Queets, Yakima, Nisqually, Tulalip, and Smith River tribes. Siletz teams placed first in the 4th to 6,h-grade division, first in the 7th to 9th-grade division, and third in the 10th to 12,h-grade division. This year’s event was the biggest ever, with all three brackets filled. Siletz housing residents pulled together to make this a great activity for our youth. More than 100 kids participated and Siletz youth proved to be great athletes and good sportsmen. Big thanks to the residents who made this happen because without you, it would be impossible: Housing staff representative Tamara Morrow, who worked so hard, and the Maintenance crew, who helped with the setup and take down. Thank you Sharon and Doc for the concession stand; Mitzi and Charlie for the barbeque; Rick and Jim for cleanup; and Siletz News for making sure we got good pictures. Good job, Natasha! Thank goodness for Pepsi, which came through with the special events 16 □ Siletz News □ booth and Pepsi, Chinook Winds for the water, Siletz Valley School for use of the gym, and the Siletz Diabetes Program and JOM for sponsorship fees. Thank you coaches - Wazzy Case (4th to 6,h-grade) and Steve Jackson (7th to 9,h-grade) - and assistant coaches Jennifer Metcalf and Heather Rivera, all of whom dedicated their time and skills to our kids. You make it possible for our children to have this opportunity. Thank you everyone who pitched in and committed their time and worked for the weekend. The kids were a big help and it didn’t go unnoticed. Last but not least, to my family: Thank you, Wazzy, for getting the referees scheduled and there for every game; Lori, you’re the best, I couldn’t do it without you; Ami, who made sure the scorebook was taken care of; Ardie and Arron, who kept the clock running; Cheryl, who helped with very little - well no - notice; and Fonda, who will just do anything. I appreciated you all so much. I love my family for being part of this. It’s a lot of work and dedication and I know you do it for your kids. I say it’s just like having a baby. You forget about the pain by next year and do it again, right Sharon!
