Most others only offer half day,” said Van Peters, administrator of Siletz Valley School. Van says the school has an open- door policy and invites people to come in and visit. He especially welcomes parents at any time to visit the classroom to see what’s going on. “We have all new teachers and they all meet the No Child Left Behind Act - that’s highly qualified. And all of the teaching assistants meet that same category. We have good staff. Good schools have good teachers and good teachers make good schools - and we have some good teachers,” he said. Dr. Ana Becerra, former Lincoln County School District curriculum specialist, joined the support staff in early October as a consultant to help develop the school’s curriculum and align it to the state standards. Almost all of the school’s programs are in place. One of the last missing pieces was a physical education teacher, but he’s now on board and all the schedules are getting finalized. Van said that at this point, the school is doing very well and has a lot of things going. The teachers have started to implement the Success For All literacy program, now entering its third year. The only challenge with SFA is that all of the teachers need training in it before it can be implemented. See additional photos on pages 10 and 11. Laura Henderson, SFA coordinator, has been training the teachers so they can get the program started. Math is one area that didn’t initially contain a lot of curriculum. But that changed when the K-8 math book series arrived in early October. Teachers are now implementing this throughout the school, as well as the phonics and spelling curriculum for grades K-4. “The science curriculum was one that was here prior to us taking over school and has been implemented since school started. We still have some areas in there that need to be covered and we’re looking at various supplemental materials that we can get to bring in to See Siletz Valley on page 14.
