TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS Elders Gather Bear Grass and Huckleberries by Kathryn Dick On Aug. 24, we took three elder vans and met with other gatherers at the Pine Cone Restaurant to head for Cougar Rock. Bud Lane and Robert Kentta took a group to Cougar Rock to show us how to gather bear grass and while there, we also picked huckle berries. It was a wonderful day with lots of fun and laughs. The ride there was quite exciting. Blinded by the dust, we slowly made our way to Cougar Rock, very high on top of the mountain. At one point, we lost the vehicle ahead of us, but we had a tracker on our van and she found the road we were to take. We rocked and rolled and bounced all the way to the top. It was quite fun getting out and seeing how to get the bear grass and pull it up. It was a hot day, but there was shade. Thanks to everyone who helped the elders gather the grass they needed. On the way down the hill, we stopped and the elders who needed to were able to get sticks from the trees. We’re looking forward to some nice baskets this fall. Being late in the day, we were hungry and 17 elders stopped for dinner in Lebanon at the Shari’s Restaurant. With hugs and good-byes, we went our separate ways. It was a great day and all of us were tired, but it was such a good tired.
