It’s Happening at Chinook Winds in September ■ ■ ■ Coastal Rhythm & Blues IV Returns Chinook Winds Casino presents Rhythm & Blues IV, a R&B concert and dance, on Oct. 18. This will be a return engagement for two well-known Northwest bands and includes the added presence of the great Mel Brown. Patrick Lamb, Paul deLay, and Mel Brown and their bands, all celebrated musicians in the R&B sphere, will each perform for 90 minutes. The concert will conclude with a grand finale’ master jam session. The Patrick Lamb Band features Patrick Lamb on the sax. He has per formed with and opened for such artists as George Benson, B.B. King, Kenny G., Wynton and Branford Marsalis, and has played at the White House. Paul deLay, considered one of the finest blues harmonica players and singer-songwriters, and his band are well known in blues circles across the nation. The Philadelphia Enquirer recently printed, “For a bluesman, and he’s a great one, Paul deLay has the most infectiously bright spirit you’re likely to hear.... deLay doesn’t pull any punches, and like the best blues, his songs have the ring of truth that comes from real-life experiences.” This is Mel Brown’s first appear ance at Chinook Winds. Noted for his work with The Supremes, The Temptations, Diana Ross, Martha and The Vandellas, and numerous jazz musicians, Brown has firmly established himself as one of America’s foremost drummers. He’seven played with The Beatles — he’s the drum mer on their release of My Sweet Lord. Brown toured with Diana Ross from 1979 to 1990. He gave his most memorable concert when they played at the Royal Albert Hall and the Queen of England came to hear them. Brown loves straight ahead main stream jazz and has toured with Teddy Edwards and Bill Watrous. He regularly teams up with legendary jazz bassist Leroy Vinnegar at Atwater’s Restaurant. They have recorded a number of CDs, including the remarkable Walkin’ the Basses in 1991. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; the music runs from 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. A food court and no-host bar, as well as non alcoholic beverages, will be available. Love, Grandma Alice Bier Named Superstar for Second Quarter Walt Bier from the Security Depart ment was selected as Chinook Wind Casino’s Superstar for the second quarter of 2003. Tribal elders, members of the Gaming Council, the Siletz Tribal Regulatory Agency, Chinook Winds directors, and several casino staff members were present at the Superstar ceremony on July 31. In recognition of his achievement, Walt was presented with a $1,000 check and a marble tile that will be displayed at the front of the casino. To be eligible to receive the Superstar award, an employee must perform his/her duties at a high standard of excellence on a consistent basis. He/she must exhibit above-the-norm internal and external customer service and be a team leader by example. Instances of exemplary performance must be documented. After a person is nominated for the award, the nomination goes through fez Walt Bier several reviews before the final selection is made. Both casino staff and casino guests can submit Superstar nominations. With more than 700 employees, and only four of these awards given each year, it’s a real honor to be chosen as the Superstar. Walt was nominated by a guest, who wrote a lengthy letter (six-plus pages) explaining her ordeal. She was separated from the friend with whom she came to Chinook Winds. Walt made every effort to help her locate her friend and make this guest comfortable. After searching, it was clear the friend had left the casino. This guest had spent all of her money and had no way back to Portland. Walt gave the guest money so she could have something to eat and when he finished his shift at 8 a.m., went home to change his clothes. Then he and his wife drove the guest home to Portland. In our guest’s own words, “Sir, you have found a very deserving man, with honest dignity and sincerity to his job. He deserves a promotion. He is one in a million?'
