Council Approves Student Incentive Program The Siletz Tribal Council places great emphasis on educational achievement for tribal members. Each year, the tribe funds student activities ranging from Head Start/preschool through the college level. Initially, all funding was from federal government sources, but in later years has been a combination of federal, tribal, and gaming revenues. This year, the Tribal Council approved a Student Incentive Program, designed to reward student accomplishment as they graduate from the following levels: Head Start/Preschool Kindergarten Elementary School Middle School High School Adult Vocational Training Certificate Higher Education Summer Intern/Work Experience Program Returns Last year, the Siletz Tribe funded a Summer Intern/Work Experience Program to give college-level students an opportunity to gain hands-on expe rience working within tribal government. The highly successful program placed five students in different departments within the tribal organization - Accounting, Clinic Management, the Diabetes Program, Finance, and Clinic Operations. They gained work experience that they could use for their practicum and gained working knowledge of tribal programs. The tribe hopes that utilizing this program will encourage more tribal students to return to work for the tribe after graduation. The Tribal Council once again has funded the Summer Intern/Work Experience Program for tribal higher education students. Priority will be given to upper-level students, but any college-level student is eligible to apply. Application forms will be mailed to all students who utilize the tribe’s Higher Education program. If you don’t utilize this program or didn’t get an application form, please contact the education specialist in your area. Applications are due by 4:30 p.m. on June 13,2003. Students selected will begin work on July 1,2003. Any student who graduated from the above classifications (except AVT) in the 2002-2003 school year (from September 2002 to June 30, 2003) are asked to submit a copy of their graduation certificate, name, and address to the education specialist in their area. AVT students who graduated from Jan. 1, 2003, through June 30, 2003, are asked to submit a copy of their graduation certificate to the education specialist in their area. The education specialist will submit the certificate for the student incentive and mail the incentive to the student. For all students outside of the 11-county service area, please forward your graduation certificate to Ramona Fisher, Education Specialist, CTSI, P.O. Box 549, Siletz, OR 97380-0549. Applicants must include the application form, verification of their physical address (i.e. utility bill, property tax statement), and for children who reside with non-tribal custodial parents, verification that the applicant has legal custody of the tribal children. We’ll accept applications from any enrolled tribal member or parents of enrolled tribal children in non-tribal homes who didn’t receive a computer last year. Remember, if you or your address was used previously, you’re ineligible to reapply. Applications will be accepted in your name as it appears on the tribal roll. If your name has changed for any reason (marriage, divorce, legal name change), please forward a copy of that documentation along with your application. We’ll then change your name on the tribal roll. Because gaming revenues are used to purchase the computers, the IRS requires that recipients be taxed for the value of the computers. The value is determined by the individual purchase price. Computer recipients will be mailed a 1099-MISC form in January 2004 for use when filing their 2003 taxes. Individuals are responsible for all taxes associated with the computers. 10 □ Siletz News □ May 2003 General Council Meeting Keizer City Hall 930 Chemawa Road N.E.
