LETTERS TO THE EDITOR To the editor: I would like to thank everyone for their love, concern, and prayers during my surgery and stay in the hospital, and now my recovery. I want to especially thank all my family members who stayed long hours at the hospital - my children, Judy, Mel, Art, and Joe, who are my heart; my grandchildren and great-grandchild; my brother, Delbert, and his wife, Sharen; my brother-in-law, Chuck; all my nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews, as well as cousins and close family friends. I also want to thank everyone from the community who called, sent messages, letters, cards, and flowers and visited, providing support to my family during the weeks I was in the hospital and who have continued to provide that support now that I am home. Thanks to the Eugene-Springfield area office staff - especially Cathy Rasmussen and Miranda Strong - for helping with transportation, juggling appointments, and providing care in their fields of expertise. Their help and support have been wonderful. All the love and prayers from our extended community have helped us all so much and continue to do so. Thank you to everyone. Sincerely, Clarice (Babe) McKnight To the editor: On behalf of Oregon Coast Community College, I want to thank the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Advisory Board and Siletz Tribal Council for approving a grant to fund computers for the OCCC computer lab. This educational equipment will be used to train local students from Lincoln County in computer graphics, art, drafting, and other related subjects. The timing of this grant was of great importance to the college, especially with the large cuts in state funding for community colleges. We appreciate the fact that the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians values local educational opportunities and look forward to offering a more complete and varied curriculum to serve area students. With the grant generously provided by the tribe and other contributors, the college was able to secure a total of 11 computers for the lab. The students, faculty, and staff of Oregon Coast Community College are grateful to the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Advisory Board and Siletz Tribal Council. Sincerely, Pat O’Connor President, Oregon Coast Community College Siletz News Letters Policy Siletz News, a publication of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon, is published once a month. April 2003 To the editor: I just want to say that I was happy to see the incumbents, who ran for Tribal Council made it back on. Our Tribal Council is in the middle of many different business deals and at least I know they can move forward on them instead of bringing new members up to date or having to fight to keep the deals they have going to better our tribe. I was disappointed to see that the general membership did not pass the pay increase for Tribal Council, though. After being Tribal Council secretary for two years, I know that they work very hard and long hours. I read a letter from a tribal member last month saying how Tribal Council gets to travel and I just want to say this. While I was working for the Gaming Commission, I decided to take a week of vacation and travel with my mom (Jane John) to experience the largest Indian casino in the U.S. Well, I did a lot of gambling and sightseeing by myself as she spent the whole day going to meetings. By the time she did get out of the meetings, it was always at least 5 or 6 p.m. and we did go to a restaurant to eat and gambled a little, but she was usually exhausted and we really just enjoyed each other’s company in our room. So if all tribal members think Tribal Council travels just to experience the place where the conference is being held, you're in for a surprise. They go to keep up on what’s happening with other Indian casinos and rules and regulations for all programs that affect the tribe. As a matter of fact, ask any child of council members. They'll all say the same thing I’m saying. My mother works hard and I'm sorry to see tribal members think so little of our council, which works hard and has been working hard for years, for our tribe. Next time the issue of a raise for our Tribal Council comes up, think about what our council has done for our tribe and give them the raise that they so deserve! Thank you for taking the time to read this and be proud of our Tribal Council today! Glendora Osborn To the editor: Thank you to Mona Fisher and her department. So often we don’t let people know how much they are appreciated. Mona has recently provided our youth with fun activities and helped with funds for school-related activities, such as the recent middle school snowboarding trip. When people complained about the educational needs of our children, Mona went to the school and met with teachers. She is always looking out for our children. It is really wonderful to have someone like Mona there for our children. So we want to say “Good job, Mona!’’ Thank you. Park and Willow Nelson Send letters to: Siletz News P.O.
