LETTERS TO THE EDITOR »—i'ii" I To the editor: The family of Gladys Muschamp wishes to thank the Siletz community. Your many acts of kindness, caring, and sharing, your love, your support, and your prayers during these trying times will always be remembered. The Muschamp Family To the editor: As a candidate for the 2003 Tribal Council elections, I would like to thank those members who voted for me in this year’s election. I found the election process to be a valuable experience and particularly enjoyed the candidate’s fair. I hope to run again in the future and encourage the Election Board to try to schedule a candidate’s fair at each of the four tribal area office locations in the coming year. This would allow more tribal membership participation in the process and an opportunity for tribal members to hear what each candidate has to say. This is just one issue that I campaigned for, as I believe that it’s important that the tribe try to provide more opportunities for tribal member participation within the 11-county service district. I would also like to thank my family for their support and encouragement to run in this year’s election. I congratulate the 2(X)3 elected council members and hope that the current Tribal Council will To the editor: I would like to thank everyone who voted for me. I really appreciate your support. And I’d also like to congratulate Reg Butler, JoAnn Miller, and Dave Hatch for their successful election. I know they will do their best to work for our tribe. Sincerely, Shari Logan address the following issues in the coming year: • • • Rotate Tribal Council meetings within the four area office service districts to enhance tribal member participation. Analyze why tribal members who apply for services are denied and evaluate if there are gaps in services that can be addressed. Continue to find ways to meet the continued health needs of tribal members everywhere. I was encouraged to see an increase in the number of voters in this year’s election and hope that this trend will continue to grow. I also hope that we’ll continue to see more candidates running for Tribal Council each year, as I believe that a healthy tribe supports participation at all levels to promote continued growth for our tribe. Sincerely, Laurie Brown-Godfrey To the editor: A big thank you to General Council for the vote of confidence. I will work to the best of my ability for all tribal members. Thank you again. Sincerely, JoAnn Miller To the editor: A big thank you to Marci Taylor for coming to our rescue (the elders) on Jan. 11,2003, when we had a problem with our bus. You were there immediately, offering your help. This is the first time we were able to reach anyone after regular hours. You are to be commended. We sincerely appreciate you. Gratefully yours, Gladys Bolton To the editor: It was my pleasure to attend the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians charitable distribution of funds on Feb. 6, 2003, in Siletz, Ore. This was my first experience in receiving grant funds and I was impressed not only with the amount of money disbursed, but with the diversity of the programs that received the funding. Leslie Middle School Soccer Club began last year with a total of 16 players. The students’ interest in the soccer club grew and this year we have a total of 44 players on three teams. We now have two boys teams and a girls team registered with Salem United Soccer Club to begin league play this spring. The cost of the Salem United Soccer Club increased from $90 a student last year to $130 this year. This year, 90 percent to 95 percent of our students playing soccer are kids at risk and come from a low economic environment. There was no possibility of their being able to afford that amount of money in order to play soccer. With the generous donation of $ 1.000 from the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, we reached our goal and we were able to register our three teams with Salem United Soccer. The students and community of Leslie Middle School are aware of their generous donation. If we had not received these funds, we would not have been able to participate in Salem United Soccer Club this year. We just want to thank the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians for the generous donation. Because of this donation, these 44 students now get to play soccer.
