NOTICES WOU Schedules 10,h Annual Pow-Wow The Multicultural Student Union (MSU) of Western Oregon University presents its 10th annual Native American pow-wow on Feb. 1, 2003. The event, “Bridging the Gap Between Tradition and Today,” runs from noon to midnight in the new PE building on the university’s campus in Monmouth, Ore. All vendors, dancers, and drummers are welcome; vendors should call to register. David West will be the master of ceremonies for the pow-wow and Craig Whitehead will be the whipman. The Eagle Valley Singers will be the host drum and the Grand Ronde veterans will serve as flag bearers. The MSU will provide concessions and will hold a raffle of various donated items from the community and pow wow vendors. A dinner break will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Pacific Room of the Werner University Center. Admission is free. For more information, call the MSU at 503-838-8403 or 503-838-8737. Time to Apply for Picard Scholarships The Intertribal Timber Council is pleased to invite all interested Native American/Alaskan students to apply to our Truman D. Picard Scholarship Program. be awarded in the Scholarships will 2003 graduating senior following categories - Native Americans high school students and the Environment ($1,200 scholarships) in Natural Resources seeking an education and students currently attending an institution of higher education and studying Natural Resources ($1,800 scholarships). Interested students must provide the following information to the Intertribal Timber Council Education Committee by 5 p.m. PST on April 4, 2003: Letter of application demonstrating 1) interest in Natural Resources, 2) commitment to education, community/culture, 3) academic merit, and 4) financial need. The Education Committee reviews and ranks each application. All four points should be addressed in the letter, which may be up to two pages in length. Resume Three letters of reference Validated enrollment in a federally recognized tribe or Native Alaska corporation, as established by the U.S. government 2003 graduating high school seniors: Please provide documented proof of application to an institution of higher education to study Natural Resources, along with school grades. CTD Scholarship Program Grows Catching the Dream (CTD), a national scholarship and school improvement organization for Native Americans, recently added 25 Native American students to its scholarship rolls. “These students were added to the 183 students we were already funding for 2002,” said Mary Phillips, recruitment director for CTD, which is located in Albuquerque, N.M. “We now have a total of 208 Native students on scholarships.” The number of students on CTD scholarships keeps growing each year. CTD plans to fund 230 students for the 2003 fiscal year, and, according to CTD director Dr. Dean Chavers, “Our goal is to provide scholarships to 1,500 college students each year by the year 2010. So far, we have funded a total of 735 students and our total number of graduates is 393. Included are 25 doctors, 45 with business degrees, 68 educators, and 100 with science degrees. Their rate of employment is 100 percent!” CTD is in the process of receiving scholarship applications for Jhe 2003 summer and fall semesters. Deadlines are March 15, 2003, for the summer semester and April 15, 2003, for the fall semester. All CTD scholarship awards are based on merit.
