NOTICES/TRIBAL COUNCIL TIMESHEETS UO, Tribes Will Boost Native American Education The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Indian Education has awarded $1.06 million to a consortium of nine Pacific Northwest tribes and the University of Oregon College of Education. Funded through the Indian Professional Development Program, the three-year grant to the Sapsik’wa_á (Teacher) Program will support the education, recruitment, training, and mentoring of American Indian teachers serving American Indian communities. The Confederated Tribes - Coos, Coquille, Grand Ronde, Klamath, Siletz, Siuslaw, Umatilla, Umpqua, and Warm Springs-and the UO College of Education identified a need for more American Indian teachers whose professional development and cultural sensitivities will make needed long term improvements to the education of American Indian youth. The UO Teacher Education Program will work with the university’s coordinator for Native American enrollment services, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, and the tribes to recruit and counsel potential applicants. An advisory council of tribal representatives, local community and school partners, and UO faculty will oversee grant activities. Members of these groups will gather this winter at an inaugural event to share work plans and honor their shared vision for improving the education of American Indian youth. The Sapsik’ wa_á Program is a component of the UO Native American Initiative, which aims to make UO a regional and national center for American Indian education and research.
