NOTICES Festival Applications Available for Native American Village The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is accepting applications for its renowned Native American Village as part of the upcoming celebration on April 25-27 and May 1-4, 2003. Now in its 34th year, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is an annual 10-day event featuring music, food, cultural exhibits, and traditional and contemporary crafts. This is one of the most prestigious and well-attended festivals in the nation with more than 500.000 people attending in 2002. The Native American Village, introduced by the festival in 2000, presents authentic Native American music and dance from the Southeast and across,the United States. The village also features a marketplace of traditional and contemporary Native American artists who express the unique qualities of North America’s indigenous cultural heritage. Space in the Native American Marketplace is limited and acceptance will be decided through a juried application process. There is no application fee. The application deadline is Nov. 14, 2002. To be considered for the Native American Marketplace, the following criteria must be met: * * Artwork must be relevant to Native American culture. In compliance with the 1990 Indian Arts and Crafts Act, all applicants must be registered members of a state- or federally recognized tribe. Apply to Directors Guild Program^ The Directors Guild - Producer Training Plan is now accepting appli cations from interested individuals for the class of 2003. To be eligible, applicants must be at least 21 years old and have employment eligibility to work in the United States. They also must meet one of the following requirements: 1) Receive a bachelor's or associate’s degree from an accredited college or university by June 23,2003, or 2) Achieve and have been discharged at the level of E-5 or above (or its equivalent) from a branch of the U.S. military service, or 3) Demonstrate that they have been employed for two years (520 work days), or 4) Submit a combination of college credits and work experience, 14 □ « • Siletz News • . • r □ • * which the training plan then approves as equivalent to a bachelor’s degree. November 2002 • • % * • information Students Invited to “Career Day” High school students interested in pursuing marine-oriented careers are invited to the Oregon Coast Aquarium’s “Career Day” on Nov. 23 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Students will spend the morning with Oregon Coast Aquarium staff and discover what it takes to pursue a career in marine animal care. Participants will tour behind the scenes while meeting with an aquarist, an aviculturist, a marine mammalogist, a dive safety officer, and an education specialist. Staff will explain what their typical day is like, what special skills they need to do their job, and how they got their start. After learning about the specifics of these marine careers, students will get a personal tour of the behind- the-scenes areas where the staff carries out its daily work. Students also will connect animals to their marine habitats as they learn how the animals are cared for. “Career Day” costs only $7.50 and is made possible through the generous sponsorship of KYTE/KNPT Radio, Marine Discovery Tours, Shilo Inns and Resorts, the News-Times, Spirit Mountain Community Fund, KVAL TV 13/ Eugene, KPIC TV 4/Roseburg, and KCBY TV 11/Coos Bay. Space is limited, so interested high school students are asked to register by Nov. 20 by calling the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Ore., at 541-867-3474, ext. 5301. Doors will open at 8:45 a.m. on Nov. 23 for “Career Day” check-in. ^OREGON COAST AQUARIUM 7 -N ewport ,' Holiday Crafts Workshop Creative craft enthusiasts will create seasonal art from nature on Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Oregon Coast Aquarium’s Holiday Crafts Workshop. Participants will create holiday wreaths and centerpieces, decorated gift tags, and wrapping paper. Deck the halls with Oregon coastal grasses and flowers, seashells, and many other jewels from nature to create unique coastal holiday masterpieces for gift-giving or home display. Oregon’s shores are rich in raw materials. Participants may bring their favorite treasures if they wish, and the aquarium will have plenty of materials on hand for everyone. “It’s so satisfying to make beautiful things from the natural materials that are all around us,” says Eileen Flory, one of the workshop leaders. “We’ll be able to enjoy the holiday items we make in this workshop for many months and years to come.” The workshop is open to participants 13 and older and will provide plenty of fun with a variety of materials and ideas for future projects. Participants will take home holiday creations they’ll be proud to show off. Space is limited and advance registration is required by calling the aquarium at 541-867-3474, ext. 5225, no later than Nov. 6. Cost is $30 for aquarium members, $35 for non-members, and includes all materials. Participants are asked to bring a lunch or purchase one at the Ferry Slip Cafe.
