The workshop lasted one-and-a-half days and 46 tribal members attended. Lodging and meals were provided. Topics included Alzheimer’s and dementia, diabetes and other health conditions, nutrition, personal care, the aging process; and medication management and challenging behaviors. Each topic was very interesting and all the comments were very positive. The Title VI Caregiver Grant paid for the workshop, which was offered to all tribal members and people who are caring for someone already or who are interested in becoming caregivers. Funding for respite care is available through this same grant for caregivers in need of a break. Anyone who would like training or information should call Elouise Case or Kathryn Dick at 541-444-2532 or 1-800-922-1399. Albert and Dorothy Wallace Elders Attend Grand Ronde Elder Honor Day by Kathryn Dick On July 26, approximately 30 Siletz elders attended the Elder Honor Day in Grand Ronde. It was a fun-filled day with a Hawaiian theme. Almost all elders attending the gathering were dressed in some type of Hawaiian attire. The luncheon was very good, followed by Bingo. The evening started out with a “cocktail hour.” Everyone was served punch in glasses decorated with a fish (not a real one) and a cherry with slices of lemon and lime on the edge. Each glass also had a cute little umbrella at the top. A tribal member and her husband provided very enjoyable music. The dinner was a Hawaiian-style one, including fancy desserts made with coconut and another with macadamia nuts and chocolate. It was a fun-filled day enjoyed by everybody.
