TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS Feather Dancers Dance in Portland Class Visits Dance House On March 12, 2002, we were invited to present our feather dancers at the National Education Conference for BIA Schools in Portland, Ore. Feather dancers Jennifer Butler, Justin Mason, Ami Case, Tim Stuart, Tasha Rilatos, Robby Jay, and Samantha Lynch, accompanied by Robert Kentta and Selene Rilatos, represented the tribe at this event. Our dancers did one special dance in honor of our beloved elder, Gramma Maude Lane, and did a fashion show of their regalia. We are very proud of these young people for representing our tribe in such an honorable manner. The conference attendees were from many tribes throughout the United States and were very impressed by the Siletz dancers. Many people shook their hands and took their pictures. All of us should be very proud of these young future leaders of our tribe. by Selene Rilatos On April 5, 2002, the fourth-grade class from Arcadia School in Toledo, Ore., came to Siletz to visit the tribe because tribal member Brett Lane Jr. attends this school. During this visit, the children went to the dance house, where Brett did a solo feather dance and sang for his classroom. It was a nice day and the children learned about our tribal traditions, pow wow etiquette, tribal history, and saw a slide show about the tribe. Each time a class visits, we talk about our culture and how we treat the land and the dance house. It’s a very educational presentation that we offer to schools and our guests. Dance House Damaged Above: Jennifer Butler, Tasha Rilatos, Ami Case, and Samantha Lynch display traditional Siletz basketry and regalia. Below: Robby Jay, Tim Stuart, and Justin Mason are ready to dance. Sometime during the weekend of April 6-7, our dance house was vandalized. It saddens us to know something like this would happen to our dance house. We wonder who would do such a thing to something so sacred to our people. We are asking for your help. If you know of anyone who may have done this to our dance house or have any information regarding, this matter, please contact the Cultural office at 1-800-922-1399, ext. 246, or 541-444-8246. The information you provide will be kept confidential. 1 ................... >■ । h General Council Meeting Keizer Heritage Foundation 980 Chemawa Road NE Keizer, Oregon May 4, 2002 Agenda 1 p.m. Call to Order Invocation Roll Call Approval of Agenda Approval of Minutes Natural Resources: Timber Sales Education: Child Care Construction Tribal Member Concerns Chairman’s Report Announcements Adjournment 8 □ Siletz News □ May 2002 ,
