Since 1955, he’s been rocking audiences with his combination of rock and blues music. Bom in St Louis, Mo., in 1926, Berry got his start with the recording of “Maybelline.” This song sold more than 1 million copies and reached No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B chart and No. 5 on the Hot 100. It was followed in 1956 by “Roll Over Beethoven” (No. 29 on the Hot 100). His next charted hit didn’t come until March 1957 when “School Days” climbed to No. 5 on the Hot 100. For the next two-and-a-half years, he enjoyed an unbroken string of chart hits (10 in all), including “Oh Baby Doll,” “Rock and Roll Music,” Sweet Little Sixteen, and “Johnny B. Goode.” These hits are, without a doubt, some of the greatest and most enduring songs in the history of rock and roll. Berry appeared numerous times in movies, including “Rock, Rock, Rock” (1956), “Mr. Rock and Roll” (1957), and “Go, Johnny Go” in 1959, in which he had an extensive speaking part. Additionally, he continued to tour with many rock ‘n’ roll legends, including Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis. Ironically, he achieved his only No. 1 hit with the sophomoric schoolyard ditty “My Ding-A-Ling” in 1972, holding Elvis to the No. 2 spot for “Burning Love.” Berry’s contribution to rock ‘n’ roll is enormous and still is being felt, as his 1986 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the 1987 release of his autobiography and accompanying movie “Hail, Hail, Rock and Roll” have proved. Charley Pride to Perform “Just Between You and Me,” you don’t want to be left out when Charley Pride comes to Chinook Winds Casino on Oct. 19 and 20. For more than 30 years, he has thrilled country fans worldwide with his personal warmth and love of country music. Pride was born in Sledge, Miss., on March 18, 1939, and at age 14 taught himself to play the guitar. At 16, he left Sledge to play baseball with the Negro League. 4 hroughout his baseball career, he sang on public address systems and in taverns. Red Sovine heard him in 1963 and arranged an audition for Pride in Nashville in 1964. This led to a recording contract with RCA and produced the 1964 hit, “Snakes Crawl At Night.” Touring incessantly throughout the 1960s, Pride debuted at the Grand Ole Opry in 1967 and hit the charts with “Does My Ring Hurt Your Finger” and “I Know One.” In 1970, he won the Country Music Award for Entertainer of the Year and already had achieved tremendous success as a major figure in the popular culture scene of the U.S. Other honors included Billboard’s Trendsetter Award and the Music Operators of America’s Entertainer of the Year Award. He continues to perform in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Fiji, and in Canadian provinces, and even takes in a few extra countries on USO tours, entertaining our service men and women who are stationed overseas. With more than 36 No. 1 country singles, Pride has remained one of the top 20 best-selling country artists of all time. He became a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1993, the first African-American in its more than 70-year history, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. Dozens of his songs stand as modem classics, such as “Kiss An Angel Good Morning,” “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone?” “Mississippi Cotton Picking Delta Town,” and, of course, “Kaw-Liga.” Don’t miss the chance to hear this legendary performer in concert.
