Wynonna Comes to Casino in August Don’t have to “Tell Me Why’’ you missed the appearance of Wynonna at Chinook Winds Casino on Aug. 10 and 11. First entering the country music scene as a duo with her mother, Naomi Judd, Wynonna went solo in 1991 when Naomi’s health forced her to retire. Her debut self-titled album in 1992 reached multi-platinum status. She followed it with two platinum albums, “Tell Me Why’’ (1993) and “Revelations” (1996). Four singles from her debut album, “She Is His Only Need,” “I Saw The Light,” “No One Else On Earth,” and “My Strongest Weakness,” hit No. 1. Other No. 1 hits were “Only Love” (June 1993) and “To Be Loved By You” (January 1996). Each album has produced Top 10 hits, with her October 1997 album “The Other Side” certified gold. Along with hit songs have come multiple nominations and awards in the country music arena as well as Grammy and other nominations. In 1992, she won Billboard’s Country Single (“No One Else On Earth”), Best New Country Artist awards, and the NARM award for Best Selling Country Female. The Country Music Association (CM A) nominated her for Best Album, Female Vocalist, and Best Duo (with Clint Black). In 1993, the Academy of Country Music (ACM) nominated her for the Top Female Vocalist and Album of the Year awards. She was nominated for Grammy Awards in the categories of Best Performance, Female, Country, and Best Country Song (“She Is His Only Need”). In 1994, she won Top Female Artist from MCA, was nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year, and had Grammy nominations for Best Vocal Collaboration (with Clint Black) and Best Performance, Female, Country. The honors continued in 1996 when Performance Magazine nominated her for the Top Country Act award and in 1997 with nominations from the American Music Awards as Favorite Female/Country and Blockbuster Entertainment as Top Female/Country. On Dec. 31, 1999, she reunited with Naomi for a “Big Bang Boogie” in Phoenix, Ariz. Ashley Judd emceed the event, making it truly a family affair. With Naomi’s illness in remission, they completed a 30-date “Power to Change Tour” in 2000. Wynonna continues to tour and record, although at a slower pace than earlier in her career. Don’t miss the chance to hear this talented artist in concert. Each show is at 8 p.m., with ticket prices ranging from $35 to $60, depending on seat location. Edgar Winter Band to Perform Take a “Free Ride” when The Edgar Winter Band performs at Chinook Winds Casino & Convention Center on Aug. 25 and 26. Versed in a wide variety of instruments and musical styles, Winter has managed to defy stereotypes. Born and raised in Beaumont, Texas, in 1946, blues-rock musician Edgar Winter grew up singing in church and in a barbershop quartet, and played saxophone from an early age. As a teen-ager, he began playing in an R&B group with his older brother, Johnny Winter, who soon became a respected blues-rock guitarist. Through his association with his brother, Edgar Winter signed a deal with Epic Records in 1970, recording an acclaimed solo debut, “Entrance,” followed by two hit albums featuring Edgar Winter backed by a horn-based group called White Trash. In late 1972, he formed the Edgar Winter group, with whom he recorded 1973’s “They Only Come Out At Night.” This contained the No. 1 synth-driven single “Frankenstein” and the Top 20 hit “Free Ride,” selling more than 2 million copies along the way. He released his most recent album, ‘The Real Deal,” on Intersound in 1996. It features cameos by Rich Derringer, Leon Russell, and Jermaine Jackson, among others. Currently residing in the LA area, Edgar Winter has spent much of the last decade penning movie scores. He also has expanded his creative talents with his acting debut in the Paramount film “Netherworld” as well as “The Cape” for MTM. Concert time is 8 p.m. on Friday, and 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Saturday, with tickets priced at $10 and $15, depending on seat location. July 2001 □ Siletz News □ 21
