The Siletz Valley Partnership and Siletz School are working with Lincoln County 4H, through the Extension Office in Newport, to build an after-school elective program. The goal is simple. They need volunteers to teach skills and talents to youth. There’s quite a list of opportunities for you to help. The rewards are great when you see the smile of pride on a student’s face upon accomplishing a special project, not to mention how you feel knowing you were a part of it all! Principal Jess Kennison, Siletz School, has placed great emphasis on the cultural richness of the Siletz area. He would love to see lessons in weaving (basketry) and beading, and invites tribal elders to tell stories. Anyone who would care to share their skills in sewing, art, gardening, cooking, grooming, and skin care is welcome. We even have a kiln and pottery wheel! Please contact Kathy Stewart at 541-444-7310 or leave a voice mail at 541 -444-8342 or 1 -800-922-1399, ext. 342. You also can contact Jess Kennison at 541-444-2523. Interested individuals will need to complete a form showing their interest in teaching or helping in the classroom. A certified staff member will be present in each classroom, and a one-time orientation workshop will be held for everyone involved in the program.
