RUN TO THE ROGUE/TRIBAL COUNCIL TIMESHEETS Gerald Ben - 8/25/00-10/1/00 An Amazing Day to Remember by Teresa Simmons Each year, the Run to the Rogue is a little different than in preceding years, putting its own mark on history. This year was even more so, in a wonderful, spiritual way. Not more intense, but different in the knowledge we would gain, the emotions we would feel, the imprint left on our memory. We arrived Saturday morning after the runners had reached their destination at the Illinois River, well ahead of their estimated arrival time. We were delighted to walk the commemorative last mile with the group and I was able to snap a few shots of what is always a deeply moving and emotional experience. We held a short ceremony following the arrival of the eagle staff, where people could share their innermost feelings about the run. In blistering heat, we all stood sharing the thoughts, joy, sorrow, pride, pain, and healing this event brings. Then for many of us, the entire day was devoted to laughter, visiting, watching the children play in the Illinois River, exploring the area, picking up rocks and contemplating the events that have taken place over the last 150 years. For the kids, it was a wonderland of turtles, itty-bitty fish, lizards, snakes, shinny pebbles, and general delight in the freedom of the water, the land, the warm breeze, and all those things that children experience to the utmost. For others, there was devotion to the people through their labor - those who spent all day cooking the food, those who set up the tables and cleaned up after us, those who made certain everything was safe and that the many needs were met. If I tried to name everyone, I would certainly leave someone out. But rest assured, we know who you were. Your efforts did not go unnoticed and they were much appreciated. After the evening meal, which was more like a feast, the night sky revealed itself with an amazing display of stars, including the Milky Way bridging the heavens from one mountain to another. I couldn’t help but think to myself that we were under the same sky, in the same spot, looking at the same stars, laughing and playing and sharing the wonder of life in much the same way that the tribal ancestors did years ago. It brought a sense of awe to my soul. Around 10 p.m., the feather dancers began. Several children danced that night. Many of them were the same children who had played to the point of exhaustion most of the day, and yet there they were dancing close to midnight, honoring an ancient tradition. As long as I live, that day will bring me joy. It was an amazing day. It was a day to remember. 16 TC 1 Ind 1 4 1.75 3.75 4 1 .5 1 4 1.5 3.75 4 1 .5 1 Gmg .5 3.25 1 .5 3.25 3.75 2 .5 2.75 2.75 1.25 1.25 .5 5.5 1 .5 3.25 3.75 2 .5 Tvl 2 2.5 2.5 .5 1 3.75 .5 1.5 1.5 2.75 8/25 8/26 8/27 8/29 8/30 9/6 9/9 9/10 9/11 9/12 9/20 9/22 9/23 9/24 10/1 Special TC land mtg., gaming Regular TC Regular TC Indirect training Indirect training Packet, tribal business Packets Packets Special TC, Gaming Board Charitable fund Packets Financial workshop Regular TC Regular TC Packets Reggie Butler - 8/24/00-10/4/00 Gmg Tvl TC 2 1 Ind 2 1 4 1.75 1 3.75 4 1.75 1 2 1 1 1 2 4 1.5 1 3.75 4 1.75 1 2 1 1 1 2 4.25 4.25 9/13 1.5 1.5 1.5 1 3.75 3.75 2 1.5 1.5 1.5 1 3.75 3.75 2 1 .5 1 2 1 .5 1 2 9/18 9/19 9/20 9/21 9/22 9/23 9/24 9/28 9/29 10/2 10/3 10/4 .5 3 3.25 2 2 5.5 1 3.5 2 2 8/24 8/25 8/26 8/27 8/28 8/29 8/30 8/31 9/5 9/6 9/7 9/8 9/11 9/12 Historical research Mtg. with Grand Ronde, Gaming Regular TC Regular TC Packets Indirect training Indirect training Packets, HIP Packets Packets, sign checks Packets Packets Gaming, packets Planning, sign checks, Packets Packets, ordinance reading Packets Packets Packets Packets Financial workshop Regular TC Regular TC Gaming packet Packets Interviews Packets Housing, packets
