TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS Danelle Zosel- Sanderson and Miranda Williams hold Nellie Carey’s trout. Nellie caught one of the biggest fish of the day! Josh McKnight’s trout really got hooked! Kids Go Trout Fishing By Danelle Zosel-Sanderson In late June, 23 6- to 12-year-old Siletz Tribal youth from Eugene, Salem, and Portland went on a fishing trip to Indian Spring Trout Farm. While at the trout farm, each youth was able to catch two fish, which were cleaned and packed in ice for them to take home. They were very proud of their catch! After the kids caught their limit, they shared a pizza lunch in Oregon City. After lunch, the youth participated in activities on tobacco prevention and education. They shared their knowledge about the harmful effects of secondhand smoke and the addictive nature of commercial tobacco. They also learned about some of the harmful chemicals in tobacco, and the difference between traditional tobacco use and commercial tobacco use. The Tobacco Prevention and Education Program sponsored the one-day fishing trip. Elders Add New Events, Activities Events Aug. 19-23 - National Indian Council on Aging in Duluth, Minn. Walt’s Words of Wit and Wisdom When I was young and gullible (still am, gullible that is), I believe that it was Edwin Simmons at the time during some of the brilliant sessions that were going on at my uncle’s backyard. Anyway, he said that one time he and Royal Plank (a neighbor of ours up at Logsden, at one time the sheriff of Lincoln County, also Charlene Blosser’s step-dad) went fishing at the lake at the head of the Yaquina River near Nashville. He and Royal were out in a boat. Edwin said that he took a stick of dynamite, a cap, and fuse out of his pocket. Said that he cut a chunk of the dynamite stick off and proceeded to start applying. Royal was not very happy with Edwin. He said that he had to arrest him and Edwin would be doing some hard time. Edwin just kept doing what he was doing until he finally had it all set up. All the time, Royal was fuming. Then Edwin lit the fuse, handed the dynamite to Royal, and said, “Are you going to talk or are you going to fish?” I took this to be gospel, at the time.
