_____________ TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS Siletz Small Business Information Center (SBIC) Reopens by Melissa Butler, SBIC Counselor The Siletz SBIC has reopened. After a hiatus of nearly 18 months, ONABEN (Oregon Native American Business and Entrepreneurial Network) and the Siletz SBIC are working together once again to supply training and support to increase business success in the local community. The Siletz SBIC has a variety of materials available for reference use in the center, including a computer program that helps people develop a small-business plan. It also has more than 100 different entrepreneur business guides that walk you through each step of a successful business. News from SIHA Elders Trips and Activities Planned by Tammy Wagner The Siletz Indian Housing Authority has been busy as bees since Elena Bassett the new executive director, came on board. Everyone is working together to make all’ the programs run smoothly and efficiently. Staff meetings are held every other week to ensure that we all stay on the same page and to get advice or assistance when needed. The first edition of our own SIHA newsletter was mailed out in June to all clients of ousmg programs and Housing residents. This is an exciting time for us all. Staff members working on the newsletter are Elena Bassett, SIHA executive director and editor-in-chief- Tammy Wagner, occupancy program specialist/HIP secretary and editor; Patricia Puma' Section 8 coordinator and assistant editor; and Bunni Snook, administrative assistant and assistant editor. We are having a lot of fun and look forward to having a monthly newsletter tor years to come. We received a lot of useful information and will use it to apply for a drug elimination grant. y ... !mf r°ve™ent Program is working on processing applications. A final list will be ready by July 1. Applications are being accepted for 2001. Contact Tammy Wagner for information regarding your application or if you would like to receive one. Applications also are being taken for Indian Health Service for septic and water problems. The new homes for the Dickenson property are being built. SIHA staff and the Board of Commissioners toured the assembly plant in June. They saw a house being built from beginning to end on the assembly line. We also would like to congratulate Howard, Jeannie, and Eagle Roy on the new addition to their family. Gabriel Cougar Roy (named for Tammy “Cougar Soft Paws” Wagner) was bom May 12, 2000. He was 7 pounds, 10 ounces and 21 * inches long. We want to congratulate Colby Retherford for winning the fire safety contest The top reg'ona poster in each category was sent to AMERIND and judged at the NAIHC convention The tOp regiOnal poster in each cate9ory also wiH be recognized at NWIHAs meeting in Port Angeles in September. Upcoming Events July 8 @ 2 p.m. - Elders monthly meeting at Chinook Winds Casino. Transportation provided from each area office. Call office for ride. Aug. 19-23 - National Indian Council on Aging in Duluth, Minn. Everyone is signed up and ready to go. If you’re not signed up and are interested in going, call Marci with your name in case we have last-minute cancellations. August — There will be no elders meeting in August. Calling All Elders Monthly Shopping - Once a month from each tribal office, we will provide transportation to a shopping center that offers grocery shopping, a variety store, and hair salon. Please call the area office nearest you to participate. Transportation - If you need transportation to appointments such as energy assistance, housing, Social Security, or others of this nature, call your local area office for details. Concert Tickets — These are available at Chinook Winds for tribal elders. Call 1 -888-244-6665 and ask for the “box office.” Tell the box office you are a tribal elder and would like “comp tickets.” They will ask for your name, phone number, concert you wish to attend, and time. You can get up to two tickets if they are available. When you pick up your tickets, you will need to sign for them. Remember,’ the sooner you call, the better your chances are of getting the tickets you want. The trip to Lapwai to visit the Nez Perce Tribe was a huge success. We took 25 people and joined the Nez Perce in honoring their elders. On our way home, we visited the Wild Horse Casino in Pendleton and the Woolen Mill.
