It’s Happening at Chinook Winds ... by Teresa Miller Council members (I to r) Reggie Butler Sr., Gerald Ben, Jessie Davis, Rosemary Landis, Bonnie Petersen, Jo Ann Miller, and Chairman Delores Pigsley pose with a $3,000 check for the Siletz Tribal Hatchery Project. Chinook Winds and Garrison’s Shell Offer 99-cent Gas On March 1 from 7-9 a.m., the Chinook Winds Casino’s Winner’s Circle, in cooperation with Garrison’s Shell stations, sold gas for 99 cents per gallon. The purpose of the promotion was to introduce area residents to the Chinook Winds Winner’s Circle and to show the casino’s appreciation to the local community. During the two-hour promotion, Shell customers received flyers distributed by the casino’s Marketing Department outlining why they received discounted gas compliments of Chinook Winds Casino and how to continue buying gas at 99 cents per gallon. To continue receiving gasoline at this price, customers can sign up as Winner's Circle members and earn points that will go toward the purchase of 99-cent gasoline. Stop by the Winner’s Circle at Chinook Winds for details. That was the official press release. Here’s what really happened: The Marketing and Winner’s Circle staff arrived at both the north and south Garrison Shell stations in Lincoln City at 6 a.m. in anticipation of the crowd they knew would be hot on their heels. Chinook Winds staff worked alongside the gas station attendants, pumping gas, washing windows, answering questions, making change, passing out soft drinks, and running, running, running. Staff from two radio stations did live remotes and a reporter from the local newspaper took photos. A natural or “unnatural” high was easy to come by with the volume of gas fumes in the chilly morning air. Photo top right: Shelley Upchurch pushes the soft drinks (or is that weightlifting?). Photo above: The Shell station at the north end of Lincoln City. Traffic was lined up at both stations, but good advance planning kept the line moving, avoiding major tie-ups on the highway. Some people had been in line since 4:30 a.m.and a few people made it through the line more than once, switching vehicles during the two-hour period. Approximately 8,600 gallons of gas was pumped and Chinook Winds made a lot a friends in the community in the process.
