It’s Happening at Chinook Winds .^_by Teresa The Neville Brothers Return The Neville Brothers will return to Chinook Winds Casino on March 31 and April 1 with their own unique sound Their 1997 concerts at the casino were like none other seen on the Oregon Coast. Marvelous harmonies, exciting rhythms, and inspiring solos are all part of the Neville Brothers’ soul jarring performance. The array of talent in this family is in itself incredible and the enthusiasm and style incorporated into their act are things of beauty. Drawing from every African American musical style, from jazz and R&B to reggae and Zydeco, Art, Charles, Cyril, and Aaron Neville have created a musical style uniquely their own. Since the 50s in New Orleans, the brothers have performed either individually or as a group, until in recent years they became reunited and included children and wives in their music, making it a true family event bonded with love. Their sound has grown and improved with time as is evident in their recent album, “Mitakuye Oyasin Oyasin/AII My Relations” (title approved by the Lakota nation elders). This album stresses the Native American belief “that we are all one, and that we all need to work together for our own survival and the survival of the planet,” a theme that is stressed through their songs and performances. The band won a Grammy in 1989 for Best Instrumental with the song “Healing Chant” from the Yellow Moon album. and Cyril Neville Aaron achieved enduring pop stardom in 1967 for “Tell it Like It Is” and for his Top 10 duets with Linda Ronstadt, “Don’t Know Much and All My Life,” both Grammy winners. There’s no way to adequately describe the music and the style of the Neville Brothers. If you’ve never seen them perform, it s time to treat yourself to an experience you’ll never forget. Millions of fans will tell you the Neville Brothers’ sound will wrap you up, carry you away, and soothe your soul. Concert time for both nights is 8 p.m. Ticket prices range from $30 to $45, depending on seat location. Left photo: Steve Hartsock, 4th quarter “Superstar” employee. Steve Hartsock Chosen as 4th Quarter Superstar Security Guard Steve Hartsock has been chosen as the Superstar” employee for the last quarter of 1999 at Chinook Winds Casino. His award included a check for $1,000. To receive the Superstar” award, an employee must perform his/her duties at a high standard of excellence on a consistent basis. He/she must exhibit above-the-norm internal and external customer service and be a team leader by example. Instances of exemplary performance must be documented. Each person’s nomination goes through several reviews before the final selection is made. With more than 700 employees and only four of these awards given each year, it’s a real honor to be chosen as the “Superstar.” Nominations can be made by customers or co-workers. Hartsock’s nomination came from another employee and among the reasons mentioned for the nomination were, “Steve is an exceptional officer who gives 110 percent every day. Steve is also a supervisor who leads by example. He expects the best from everyone but gets right down there with you to work beside you.” According to General Manager Gordon Dickie, ‘Tm proud to say that Chinook Winds has an amazing staff and, because we do, it’s extremely hard to select just one person per quarter. Steve can be as proud of his selection as we are of him.” Other nominees were Logan Smith, Shyla Simmons, Jodyne Youngblood, and Ed Schmock. — ■8 29
