This is the first installm ent o f a political column that w ill present contrasting political view s o f both liberal and conservative views to shed light on both sid e ’s opinions. TOPIC: DACA One of the major hot topic issues this year has been immigration, it was one of President Donald Trump’s most prominent issues during his election campaign, and discussions about the potential border wall, and about issues such as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act (DREAM) have been major points of contention throughout the President’s first year. Each side of the political spectrum seems to have a different idea about the best solution to the immigration’ issue. Here are a few arguments from each side. 3VSAMWES-CN ' .BY IAN VAN ORDEM-> D eferred Action for comes to this sim ple program but the C h ild h o o d A rrivals, D A C A , is in trouble, b e n e fits th a t can he said about this program is th a t it ultimately benefits The T ru m p adm inistration’s threat to rescind this act is just another example as to why the economy and the immigrants who wish to come to this country. hers stare with the economic benefits. ■ - M F = Sk NEWs/oPJNlbN EDITOR ' S i r E ‘ P O M any PeoP le on the W right, or conservative side of the p olitical spectrum, view illegal im m ig ra tio n as one o f th e m o st prevalent issues we have in today’ s he has no business being the leader o f Children who a re given work visas through p o litic a l c lim a te . This issue has the same pitfalls as the last, as it disregards the initial offense com mitted. .Crim e rates a m o n g im m ig ra n ts has also been a popular topic w hen discussing these bills, but a lot of the inform ation has been misrepresented. Early in Ja n u a ry o f la st year, the New Y ork Tim es p osted an article claim in g th at im m igran ts were less likely to com m it crim es, and w hen taken at face v alu e, this claim was true. U n fortun ately, it did not fairly analyze the issue, as the statistics they quoted discussed all immigrants, in clu d in g legal im m igrants-, rather than discussing the true issue, illegal im m igration. There, the issue gets a little more complicated. During the recent m onths, as DACA and the DREAM Act have become the. most prominent issues discussed, many Republicans have discussed passing these acts if those on the left would be w illing to make concessions towards im proving border security. After, all, the D ream ers aren ’ t truly at fau lt. However, in their attem pt to “ resist” the President’ s efforts, even this has been rejected. . I t ’ s clear th at the issue o f illegal im migration is com plex and not likely to fie resolved anytim e soon.
