This is the first installm ent o f a political column that w ill present contrasting political view s o f both liberal and
conservative views to shed light on both sid e ’s opinions.
TOPIC: DACA
One of the major hot topic issues this year has been immigration, it was one of President Donald Trump’s most prominent issues during his election campaign,
and discussions about the potential border wall, and about issues such as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and the Development, Relief,
and Education for Alien Minors Act (DREAM) have been major points of contention throughout the President’s first year. Each side of the political spectrum
seems to have a different idea about the best solution to the immigration’ issue. Here are a few arguments from each side.

legislation that has been prom inent
over the last few years, would give these
same illegal immigrants the opportunity
to stay permanently, and legally, in the
United States. This issue has the same
pitfalls as the last, as it disregards the
initial offense com mitted.
.Crim e rates a m o n g im m ig ra n ts
has also been a popular topic w hen
discussing these bills, but a lot of the
inform ation has been misrepresented.
Early in Ja n u a ry o f la st year, the
New Y ork Tim es p osted an article
claim in g th at im m igran ts were less
likely to com m it crim es, and w hen
taken at face v alu e, this claim was
true. U n fortun ately, it did not fairly
analyze the issue, as the statistics
they quoted discussed all immigrants,
in clu d in g legal im m igrants-, rather
than discussing the true issue, illegal
im m igration. There, the issue gets a
little more complicated.
During the recent m onths, as DACA
and the DREAM Act have become the.
most prominent issues discussed, many
Republicans have discussed passing
these acts if those on the left would be
w illing to make concessions towards
im proving border security. After, all,
the D ream ers aren ’ t truly at fau lt.
However, in their attem pt to “ resist”
the President’ s efforts, even this has
been rejected. .
I t ’ s clear th at the issue o f illegal
im migration is com plex and not likely
to fie resolved anytim e soon. If there
is any hope in finding a true solution
it w ill only come w hen both sides of
the political aisle are w illing to work
together to find the answer Together-.
