2 CLACKAMAS PRINT • MAY 20,2015 Lights out on campus Electrical brown-out leaves students in the dark by Cassidy Scott At approximately 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13, pow er across campus w e n t out. Students sat In th e dark fo r roughly an hour before Port land General Electric workers on scene were able to return lig h t to campus. According to Steve Corson, w h o works fo r PGE's m e d ia re la tio n s departm ent, th e b ro w n -o u t was a result o f an ineffective fuse. The fuse blew, leaving the campus w ith o u t power. Clackamas Community Col lege released a s ta te m e n t via Facebook saying it was an "electrical brow n-out" and th e p o w e r had to be sh u t off so PGE could reset th e ir breakers and restore power. However, in the meantime, students and faculty had to find th e ir way in the dark. “ It ju s t was a little frig h t ening going to th e restroom and n o t know ing w h a t’s in there,” Alex Tlcknor, CCC stu de n t, said. “Thankfully I al ways carry a flashlight w ith me." Some classes w ere m ore affected than others. For Mir- ina Derrington, CCC student, her music class struggled to m ake it th ro u g h th e d a y’s class. “W e all had to h uddle to play the p ia n o ... it was weird because o ne p erson was playing high, a n o th e r low," Derrington said. Manufacturing technology instructor Mike Mattson was affected as he was unable to prepare for his manufacturing science class, w hich involved hours o f electrical prep work. "It really ro b b e d th e stu d e n ts ," M a ttso n said. “ It probably wasted tw o hours o f th e ir time." A n o th e r class to be a f fected was th e dance class, whose students struggled as the AC was turned off: “It was to rtu re ." Karen Kistler, CCC student, said. The dance class also had to dance fo r th e m ajority o f th e class count ing th e ir own beats w ith o u t music to guide them. However, for other classes, the lack of power didn’t m at te r a t all. “There was no lights any w ay so it d id n ’t com e in to play,” Jarrod Dunham , CCC student, said. “We didn’t even realize the pow er was out.” A lthough having no elec tricity fo r more than an hour was u n fo rtu n a te fo r te a ch ers and students, th e good news was th a t there was lit tle damage to the w iring and surrounding area. “ in this case they p u t th e fuse back in, and you’re back in business,” Corson said.
