Lights out on campus
Electrical brown-out leaves students in the dark
by Cassidy Scott
At approximately 11:30 a.m.
on Wednesday, May 13, pow
er across campus w e n t out.
Students sat In th e dark fo r
roughly an hour before Port
land General Electric workers
on scene were able to return
lig h t to campus. According
to Steve Corson, w h o works
fo r PGE's m e d ia re la tio n s
departm ent, th e b ro w n -o u t
was a result o f an ineffective
fuse. The fuse blew, leaving
the campus w ith o u t power.
Clackamas Community Col
lege released a s ta te m e n t
via Facebook saying it was
an "electrical brow n-out" and
th e p o w e r had to be sh u t
off so PGE could reset th e ir
breakers and restore power.
However, in the meantime,
students and faculty had to
find th e ir way in the dark.
“ It ju s t was a little frig h t
ening going to th e restroom
and n o t know ing w h a t’s in
there,” Alex Tlcknor, CCC stu
de n t, said. “Thankfully I al
ways carry a flashlight w ith
me."
Some classes w ere m ore
affected than others. For Mir-
ina Derrington, CCC student,
her music class struggled to
m ake it th ro u g h th e d a y’s
class.
“W e all had to h uddle to
play the p ia n o ... it was weird
because o ne p erson was
playing high, a n o th e r low,"
Derrington said.
Manufacturing technology
instructor Mike Mattson was
affected as he was unable to
prepare for his manufacturing
science class, w hich involved
hours o f electrical prep work.
"It really ro b b e d th e stu
d e n ts ," M a ttso n said. “ It
probably wasted tw o hours
o f th e ir time."
A n o th e r class to be a f
fected was th e dance class,
whose students struggled as
the AC was turned off: “It was
to rtu re ." Karen Kistler, CCC
student, said. The dance class
also had to dance fo r th e
m ajority o f th e class count
ing th e ir own beats w ith o u t
music to guide them.
However, for other classes,
the lack of power didn’t m at
te r a t all.
“There was no lights any
w ay so it d id n ’t com e in to
play,” Jarrod Dunham , CCC
student, said. “We didn’t even
realize the pow er was out.”
A lthough having no elec
tricity fo r more than an hour
was u n fo rtu n a te fo r te a ch
ers and students, th e good
news was th a t there was lit
tle damage to the w iring and
surrounding area.
“ in this case they p u t th e
fuse back in, and you’re back
in business,” Corson said.
And w ith that, life on cam
pus was back to normal.
How d id you, your peers
and teachers react to th e
