APRIL 29,2015 • CLACKAMAS PRINT 3 Student candidates face off by D ebbie Fox Associated Student Government campaigns are in full swing fo r those students w ho wish th e ir voices to be heard w ith student governm ent. There are tw o candidates for president — Brent Finkbeiner and Hayiey Campa. The candidates were available fo r a question and answer session on April 22. For Campa, a great deal o f her qualifications came from her experience having been a m em ber o f ASG fo r three years. “ I really have passion fo r this team,” Campa said. “ I mean three years o f being on ASG really shows my dedication and my love fo r this school." Campa feels th a t her experience, as well as her visit to Washington, D.C., will aid her in the leadership role as president. Campa has also been involved in tuition rallies hoping to help freeze tuition. W orking along side Shelly Parini, the Dean o f College Advancement, Campa has spoken in Salem to legislators about the importance o f affordable tuition. She has also worked to help th e college p rom ote th e $ 9 0 m illion bond th a t recently passed and has also worked on the my- Clackamas survey o f w h a t students would like to see evolve at CCC. Finkbeiner also relies on his experience to help him in his role as president, specifically his service from 2 0 0 6-10 as a com bat m edic in the U.S Army. “ [In 2 0 0 8 I was] deployed to Iraq w here I was the lead medical professional fo r 25 infantry soldiers,” Finkbeiner stated. “ I am fully confident in my ability to lead a team o f students, strongly and effectively." His experience in ASG has spanned three terms and like Campa, Finkbeiner also had th e o p p o rtu n ity to travel to Salem to w ork w ith the legislature on school funding. Currently Finkbeiner is the chairperson for the r first ever Clackamas Cougar Run planning committee. Another question discussed at the forum was w hat Campa and Finkbeiner w ould do as an elected ASG President. For Finkbeiner, this means helping students’ voic es be heard as well as more attention spent on the school budget. “The president acts as an ex-officio to the Board of Education,” Finkbeiner said. “We are your sole repre sentation at the Board.” Finkbeiner also explained th a t the Board o f Educa tion is the to p decision making body at the college and as such, needs to have student representation: “You need somebody th a t is w illing to play fo r you." As far as budget and tuition goes, if elected, Fink beiner wants to make sure students know where their tu itio n money is going, where it is being spent and how it is being used. “First and fo re m o s t... the budget is extremely im portant and it is very pivotal th a t we spend your mon ey wisely,” Finkbeiner said. “The first th in g I w o u ld change w ithin ASG is regular budget reports so th a t any student at any tim e can come in and see how th e ir money is being spent.” Campa also had ideas fo r changes if elected, o f which includes a new officer for the Clubs Department. “We feel th a t a club officer, w ho is in charge of the w hole departm ent, w hich I do right now, could be re ally beneficial fo r our team," Campa said. “Overseeing ail the clubs on campus, really w orking w ith the clubs and just utilizing them to the best o f th e ir ability.” Both Campa and Finkbeiner agree in th e ir wanting to unite all students, even ones at different campuses. Students at the Harmony and Wilsonville campuses -------- Take the following steps to cast your vote: do not sense a presence o f ASG and have expressed a desire to get the same attention as the Oregon City campus. “As president, make sure we have a dedicated team to reaching out to Harmony,” Finkbeiner said. " ... whoever you guys decide for president, the students win either way.” -Brent Finkbeiner As a way to unite students, Campa expressed how to communicate even better to the student body. “I think [we need] something th a t can connect to students w hether it is just a big com m unity board," Campa said. “W hether it is a TV, which I would love to see, just showing regular announcements from ASG, regular reports, I w ould love to see th a t out there.” Candidates responded to w hat position, if any, the loser w ould hold after the election. “We talk a lot about th a t and w hoever loses is still going to stay. We both have decided th a t regardless of the outcome, we are both going to be here working for you guys,” Finkbeiner added. “Hayley and I have been working hard together on a lot o f stuff fo r students, so really this isn’t about us, it is about you guys and whoever you guys decide fo r president, the students w in either way.” photo by Andrew Koczian \ 1.
