M o re th a n a gam e: Life lessons t o be learn ed fro m sp o rts Volume 45, Issue 5 Clackamas Community College, Oregon City, OR The Clackamas An independent, student-run newspaper since 1966 Sustainability tour shows steps o f efficiency By Isaac Soper The Clackamas Print You’re entering a world w ith black skies and putrid mdwater. T he forests have been clear-cut and are now en wastelands. T h e very air you breathe is becoming poison. You are n o t entering “T he Twilight Zone,” wel come to Earth. This is n o t the same planet Earth that we lived o h in the industrial revolution, in which more coal and gasoline burning was considered to be a good thing. Clackamas Com m unity College has been making m any strides in the past few years to help dissolve our environmental footprint. “I think anyone th at reads the newspaper now an d kind o f connects the dots between some o f the dire headlines that always come out that the ‘business as usual’ stance is n ot going to work m uch longer. I think « only wise to read the writing on the wall and start changi ng how we consume, how we go about our day-to-day lire,” said Mike Noel, head o f the sustainability department at Clackamas Com m unity College and co-designer o f the self-guided Campus Sustainability Tour. Sustainability is n o longer going to he an option for us. “There’s some stat out there [mat says] we would need five Earths if everyone were to live like an American. I’ve heard that stat a num ber [a couple] o f times but then when you really stop and think about that, whoa, that’s going to requite some drastic change if we re going to all live on this Earth in harm ony” said Noel, T he new Cam pus Sustainability Tour, which is a culmi- irion o f renewable energy and sustainability projects on nation ’ campus, opened to the public in September • o of f this year. “[At] Clackamas, we have great sustainability champions in each departm ent and they were all doing their own thing,” said Noel, “and then I arrived and said ‘lets group it together and turn it into this united front.’” - B Please see SUSTAINABILITY, Page 2 A student passes one o f the pathw ay markers fo r the self- guided sustainability tour, new to campus this fall.
