Manley Clackamas Print Through Feb. 23, Niemeyer’s Alexander Gallery is hosting “Iron and Steel,” a showcase of eight regional metal sculptors’ work. The sculptors/artists are Harold Hoy, Lee Imonen, Carolyn Mills, Mylan Rakich, Tamsie Ringler, Kate Simmons, David Thompson and Julian Voss-Andreae. The work on display inchides cast iron, forged iron and steel, mixed media and found object assemblage, among others. Most of the sculptures have a postmodem feel. It is likely that one who isn’t into post-modernism will view the sculptures and wonder what it is exactly that they are looking at, or even why it is considered art. Despite the post-modernism and “what-the-fuck” factor (or possibly because of it), “Iron and Steel” is worth checking out for the non-art enthusiast. There are some sculp tures that aren’t as abstract as the crayon scribbles of an toddler, one of them being metal shaped to look like African masks, another being a sculpture of horses. However, these types of sculp tures are definitely in the minority, so expect to do some wild interpretation of the meanings of most pieces.
