Gray’s presentation was a project done by her poetry stu dents, with help from some art and computer science students. Taking a 16th century paint ing by Pieter Brueghel, Gray divided it up into small squares. She printed these squares off and handed one to each of her beginning poetry students. The students didn’t know the pieces they had were part of a larger painting. “I [told them to] have a piece of this and write a poem and bless their hearts, they did,” said Gray. “[The result] was a pattern of low, or mid-frequency, vow els [throughout the poems]. The consonants were mostly melodic and soft,” Gray said. “What that showed me was that the tone of the paint came through the poems.” “This is a literary theory called intertextuality. That means,” explained Gray, “that whenever we respond to some thing, it influences us. So in a sense, the [poetry students] were painted.” Gray then took a poem writ ten by William Carlos Williams about that same painting and cut it up line by line. She went to one of the college’s art instruc tors, David Anderson and asked if he could have his students paint what they saw in the lines of Williams’ poem. For the poets the tone of the paint affected their poetry. For the painters the poem affect ed their paintings. Most of the poems were about death, but nearly all the paintings were full of life and bright colors. “This was all very weird,” said Gray. “I asked the computer science folks if there was any way to do this digitally.” And they did that, too, by putting the painting on a computer and then making it so that whenever a portion of the painting was clicked on, the respective poem popped up. “Sometimes an artist feels that he or she is removed from the world,” said Gray. “What this [whole thing] showed was that you can never be removed from the world. We’re always being colored and painted.” ags at half-staff not Just CC Cultural Coalition ir personal rememberance awards Estacada quilt — determines the period of time in the presidential order and it applies to all The Clackamas Print federal government offices and instal lations, and any other entity that flies ith a war going on and the American flag, including private many American citizens citizens. feeling as patriotic as State governors can also order U.S. ever, many questions arise as flags to and how state flags to half-staff for all to fly the American flag and when to state government offices and instal lower to half-staff to honor war dead lations, including schools and public and other dignitaries who pass on. colleges and universities, to honor According to USFlag.org, a web important people who have passed site dedicated to the flag of the United on.
