April 23, 2003 The Clackamas Print ¡Solid actors can't enliven mediocre plot I g JACK NICHOLSON and ADAM SANDLER Robb Egan The Clackamas Print What can I say about “Anger I Management”? It has a solid cast led Ly the surprisingly talented Adam I Sandler (see “Punch Drunk Love” if you don’t believe me) and acting leg- -............. ” whipping boy Dave Buznic, who, end Jack Nicholson (“About Schmidt ’through a series of mishaps and misun etc. etc.). derstandings, manages to assault a Both of these actors are coming off flight attendant and get tazered by an of incredibly solid performances, old air marshal, and then subsequently Jack having proved he’s still got it, and Sandler having surprised the hell out of arrested, tried, and sentenced to under go anger management therapy. So with two talented, proven actors joins a support group led by Dr. Buddy Rydell (Jack Nicholson), who he hap on board, how could this movie be pened to meet on that same unfortunate anything but incredible? Indeed, every thing sounds golden and terrific until plane ride. What follows is an unbelievable you get right down to that nemesis of half hour of Dave suffering through all modem filmmakers, the plot. It’s a weak premise to begin with, and 'one incredible bad turn after another. Well I got tired of that, so I set out to find the best “restaurants” within five miles of campus. This week I have chosen a Chinese joint that is a stone’s throw away. Head out of campus on' the north side at 213 and Molalla Ave. Go north on Molalla Ave. just a few blocks and you will find Leong’s. This place looks rundown from the outside, but inside is a nice establishment with a very cozy atmosphere. For lunch they have a combo list that is cheaper than a value meal at McDonald’s. Also, if you feel like going all out there is a lunch buffet for around the same price. All of the lunch combos are available for cany out! The food is not bad; I always get combo “B,” which is enough food to fill you up and then some. Be sure to check in next week for another place within five miles for $5. Dave agrees, based on the sole premise of staying out of prison, and soon finds himself tested to his limits as he is forced to deal with Buddy’s unorthodox methods. The bulk of the movie revolves around Buddy’s unusu al therapy as he tries to get Dave to accept and express his anger so he can move on. Some of the methods used are really quite funny, including a hilar ious rendition of “I Feel Pretty” that has to be seen to be believed. However, while there are moments where this movie shines as a comedy, too often it devolves into amateurish dick jokes, and even the occasional sight gag. Director Peter Segal (“Tommy Boy”) and writer David Dorfman would have done better to continue to play off the strengths of the actors rather than continuously letting scenes depreciate into basically a pro longed and not particularly witty “Saturday Night Live” skit. One of the more amusing things about “Anger Management” is its celebrity cameos, including Heather Graham, Woody Harrelson, several players for the NY Yankees, Rudy Guliani and a large cast of actors from previous Sandler movies. In the end, “Anger Management” is decidedly average, and should proba bly be considered rental fodder. See it if you love Nicholson or Sandler, if you’re really bored one weekend, or if you’re out on a date with someone you don’t like much. Otherwise, go see “About Schmidt,” or save your conces sion money and buy “Punch Drunk Love” when it comes out on DVD in June. 50 Cent's DVD explains his life story Nic Delzell The Clackamas Print Curtis Jackson, a.k.a. 50 Cent or Ferrari F-50, has hit the stores again, this time bringing fans “The New Breed” DVD. To understand 50 and his music know this: 50’s lyrics are not for innocent ears. Imagine the lyrics that would result if your father split when you were three and your crack dealer mother died when you turned 11. During one of many interviews included, 50 described his life before rap: “I sold crack 100 miles an hour up the- block. From there it leaves an aura around me, like they know I stopped doing that to rap.” 50 CENT During another interview 50 recalls run-ins with executives at Columbia records: “They didn’t understand 50 Cent” He goes on to explain his new deal with Shady/Aftermath records as “the best thing that ever happened” to him. The new music video for “Heat” proves 50 is genius. The video imitates the video game “Grand Theft Auto.” In the video, two gamers go after late rap pers Tupac Shakur and Christopher Wallace, then finally try to hunt down 50. “The New Breed” also includes the “Free Tony Ya-Yo” interview. Tony Ya- Yo is a member of the Gorilla-Unit (G- Unit), and is currently serving time for gun possession. The interview is an interesting look into the mind of an incar cerated rap star. When addressing his current career status Ya-Yo said, “I need to change my life, do something positive.” The bonus CD contains three new songs, ‘True Loyalty,” “8 Mile Road (G- Unit Remix)” and “In Da Hood.” Live performances with G-Unit, Eminem and D-12 are also included. Multiple music videos and bonus material make this DVD well worth the power of 15 dollars. Three suggestions to satisfy your literary appetite 1. The Dalai Lama’s “The Art Of Happiness” is a book that people of all religions and cultures can read and understand. It is one of the most insight ful books not geared toward converting people to a religion or specific way of thinking. It focuses on the betterment of a person’s day-to-day life. This book offers a clear way of thinking about interacting with people and making choices in life. 2. “The Lord Of The Rings” has set the trend for almost all fantasy books that came after. Its journey through the world of mid dle earth is a story that captivates the soul and brings the reader into the book with the characters. This book was great even after reading it for the third time. In order to understand the sheer depth and intensity of this wonderful series one must read the series of books before seeing the movies. 3. “Invisible Monsters” is a book about a young girl’s journey to the realiza tion that she is not the center of a sick and opinionated world. The book jumps around a little but is marvelous ly put together and keeps the reader fascinated. If you liked Chuck Palahniuck’s ‘Tight Club” then you will enjoy this twisted and thrilling book, which is also by Palahniuck.
