ô A&E WedNEsdAy, MARch 17, 2002 ThE CI ac I camas P rint ) Carolines rock the house DAISY BAIN A&E Editor The Carolines, a five-deep band based in Portland, will perform live in the McLoughlin Theatre on Fri day evening. The backbone of inspira tion for the five young (two band members are still finish ing high school) artists in clude the Beach Boys, Stevie Wonder and The Beatles. The Carolines merge their own ar rangements with these vintage sounds of rock bands from the mid-60s. The band has been to gether for over five years and in Nov. 2001 released their CD “Don’t Believe What You Hear.” In an interview with The Oregonian on Nov. 2, 2001, Purscelley described their band like this: “We’re a rock band that keeps a leash on what we do. With pop music, you’re writing to serve the song, but in rock you’re working toward an audience response. We’re not waiting for the Bic lighters to come out when we finish a show.” The CD consists of seven original songs, running 25 minutes long. Their ages can be heard in their voices, but the music is way beyond their years. “Our goal is really to take these older ideas and put the stamp of our own personali ties onto them. We don’t claim to be revolutionaries— it’s definitely pop music,” said Purscelley. The concert, sponsored by the Associated Student Government, will open at 6:30 p.m., March 15.
