Carolines rock the house
DAISY BAIN
A&E Editor
The Carolines, a five-deep
band based in Portland, will
perform
live
in
the
McLoughlin Theatre on Fri
day evening.
The backbone of inspira
tion for the five young (two
band members are still finish
ing high school) artists in
clude the Beach Boys, Stevie
Wonder and The Beatles. The
Carolines merge their own ar
rangements with these vintage
sounds of rock bands from the
mid-60s.
The band has been to
gether for over five years and
in Nov. 2001 released their
CD “Don’t Believe What You
Hear.”
In an interview with The
Oregonian on Nov. 2, 2001,
Purscelley described their
band like this: “We’re a rock
band that keeps a leash on
what we do. With pop music,
you’re writing to serve the
song, but in rock you’re
working toward an audience
response. We’re not waiting
for the Bic lighters to come
out when we finish a show.”
The CD consists of seven
original songs, running 25
minutes long. They cover
topics that appeal to most of

the target audience: the young
ladies. Their ages can be heard
in their voices, but the music
is way beyond their years.
“Our goal is really to take
these older ideas and put the
stamp of our own personali
ties onto them. We don’t
claim to be revolutionaries—
it’s definitely pop music,”
said Purscelley. The concert,
sponsored by the Associated
Student Government, will open
at 6:30 p.m., March 15. Tick
ets are $5 at the door.
If you miss the concert Friday
night or want to see them again,
you can catch them Thursday,
March 21, 9 p.m at Meow
Meow in Portland. It’s a show
for all ages.
