Morris rushed for 129 yards in the game. NICK BARRON Staff Writer The University of Oregon squeaked by UCLA at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, winning 21- 20. The victory was the 500th in Oregon’s history and it moved the Ducks up to number four in the Bowl Championship Series stand ings. The move from last week’s number six ranking marks the first time Oregon has been in the top five. Oregon’s record improves to 9-1 overall, 6-1 in the Pac-10, and remains tied with Washington State for first place in the confer ence. Oregon State surprised every one in college football by slaugh tering the Huskies of Washington, 49-24, Saturday, at Husky Sta dium. OSU’s win keeps the Bea vers’ bowl hopes alive, however grim, with a 4-5 over all record and 3-4 Pac-10 record. Next up for OSU is Northern Arizona, fol lowed by the Civil War game against the University of Oregon. Mark McGwire has made it fi nal: St. Louis’ slugger is retiring after 16 seasons, citing lack of ability to perform as the largest reason the former home run king is calling it quits. Ichiro Suzuki has been named the American League Rookie of the Year, with only one vote keeping the deci sion from being unanimous. Seattle still remains in next to last place in the AFC West with a 4-4 record, while Oakland is still in first with a 6-2 record. San Francisco overcame the New Orleans Saints by one point, 28-27, keeping them in sec ond place in the NFC West be hind St. Louis. In the National Hockey League, the Vancouver Canucks continue to lie at the bottom of the North west division of the Western Con ference, with a 7-11-1 record and 15 points. Colorado is tied with Vancouver for last place with a 7- 10-1 record and 15 points as well. First place in the division is Calgary, who owns a 12-2-1 record and 27 points. The Flames of Calgary are the second best team in the NHL, behind Detroit, who has 29 points. The Los Angeles Lakers have yet to lose their first game of the season, as.they.are 6-0 and in first place of the Pacific division of the Western Conference in the Na tional Basketball Association.
