14________ _ WedNEsdAy, NovEivibeR 14, 2001 Sports Cougars Stumble ClACkAMAS P rînt Memo to volleyball team By Nick Barron _______ NICK BARRON Jit-«B; Staff Writer Attempting to motivate Clackamas’ volleyball team for a match that counted for noth ing but pride and momentum was too daunting of a task, as the Cougars lost to Chemeketa Community College last Wednesday in three straight games. The match was the last one in Clackamas’ regular season, with the Cougars already pos sessing a bid to the Northwest Athletic Association of Commu nity Colleges championship tournament. Going into the match with Chemeketa, the Cougars had hoped to continue to build the momentum they had started over the last few weeks. But from the very beginning of the first game against Chemeketa, it was apparent that Clackamas was looking ahead to the NWAACC tournament instead of focusing on its cur rent opponent. Before the Cou gars realized it, Chemeketa had won the first two games of the match, with the third going to the Storm too. Clackamas’ volleyball coach, Kathie Woods, was disap pointed in her team’s perfor mance. “The match (against Chemeketa) surprised me. We had the attitude that it doesn’t matter,” she said. On the positive side, Coach Woods believes that the match can be a warning for her team. “I think that match can provide a reality check for us. That we have done some great things (this season), but that we still need to do great things.” Few Cougar players shined against the Storm. One who did was Jeannette Lee with ten kills and fifty percent hitting, and Karen Anderson in digs with fourteen. The Cougar’s league record drops to 5-7, and their overall record to 29-15. For the regular season, Lori Free led Clackamas in kills with 109 and in digs with 172. Please read carefully and attempt to accomplish a things that I list in this memo. If you have any questions, you si not ask me, according to rule number three. Entenman has been chosen as a member of the First Team All-Stars for the South ern Region, and Lee, Free, Corinne Lawrence and Dancer were given Honorable Mention honors. Because of Entenman’s First Team selection and Lee’s high ranking, both will play in the Sophomore All-Star Game at Green River Dec. 1. In what could be the last match of the season for the Cou gars, Clackamas faces Shoreline Community College, a team that the Cougars have beaten three times this year. Despite the suc cess her team has had this sea son against Shoreline, Woods is making sure her team will be ready this weekend, asking her players to give their “hardest effort. ” Two of the things that Coach Woods believes her team needs to work on before the It started as a dream, it will end as a reality. NWAACC Championships November 15-17 Bellevue, Washington Go Cougars'- NWAACC tournament are the communication on the floor and making sure the Cougars play to win. The largest problem is the Cougars themselves. Woods feels that if her team can over come their mental struggles, then nothing stands in their way for an NWAACC title. The statistics and polls do not give the Cougars much of a chance at winning the NWAACC tournament, but Woods remains optimistic. “I believe any team can be beat, ” Coach Woods said. Clackamas is strong in that they work together as a team and know and understand their strategies. According to Woods, all her team has to do is focus on their goals and their dreams this weekend, and ev erything will fall into place. The Cougars and Coach Woods hope that place will be first in the NWAACC. Rules for Athletes 1. An athlete is an individual who is allowed to have an ego enough to fill the venue that the athlete plays in. 2. An athlete can walk on water. 3. Sports writers are leeches who should be refused oxygen on a basis. 4. Respect for other individuals is not necessary; instead an ai should not acknowledge the presence of another human being ui -the other person feeds your ego as one feeds a starving St. Ben -the other person falls to their knees and acknowledges your atl greatness; -the other person is a star athlete of the opposite sex. 5. An athlete can walk on water. 6. An athlete’s Friday night should be spent with Captain Morga his friend Jack Daniels. 7. In addition to rule number six, an athlete’s Friday night shouli be filled with large numbers of other athletes of the opposite sex e ing the company of Captain Morgan and Mr. Daniels. 8. It is perfectly acceptable for an athlete to ignore what her < tells her, in favor of executing her own plan. 9. There is no team, just I. 10. Athletes can walk on water. 11. When greeting a sports writer on campus, especially the one covers their team, an athlete should pass by him as one passes tree. 12. An athlete’s teammates should be regarded as the enem those teammates could hinder the athlete’ s progress to athletic dom. 13. The world does revolve around an athlete. 14. When an athlete enters a room, it is necessary that all in the bow to the athlete. In conclusion, I must say that I am saddened that I was fort write this memorandum. Hopefully all 13 of you will read this and i that you are not behaving as the prototypical athlete. Please i immediately.
