Both teammates were also Clackamas’ highest scorers at the NWAACC Championship meet. They are nationally ranked in their events. Loebl is an All-American in the shot put. Loebl won first place in the hammer and discus at NWAACC and only missed first place in the shot put by Vi inch. He also set a championship meet record in the discus. Holliday is the national junior college record holder in the pole vault. Her final vault of the year, a whopping 14-4 ft., won her first place at the NWAACC Champion ships. Holliday also ran the sec ond fastest 400 meters in the na tion and is ranked second in the nation in that event. She is a two time All-American in both the pole vault and the 4x400 relay, and much like Loebl, is a team player. “Both of them are good team people,” said Head Coach Jack Kegg. “They inspired the rest of the team.” Led Cougars to NWAACC Cross-Country Championship Coach of the Year honors go to Hickey Third award for Clackamas graduate ELENA BORYSKA Staff Writer Mike Hickey received the 2001 Coach'of the Year awards for men’s and women’s cross-country last week; he also won last year for men’s cross-country making a to tal of three awards so far in his coaching career. Hickey first came to CCC in 1992 as a student. During his two years in Clackamas’ track program, Hickey was the NWAACC cham pion in the 5K and a member of the men’s cross-country team that placed first both years. From there, Hickey worked in Seattle on an in ternship when he got a call to be interviewed for the cross-country coaching job here. Hickey was hired, and since has won three Coach of the Year awards. Last year at the awards ban quet, Mike Hodges, Hickey’s coach during his years as a Cou gar, was inducted into the hall of PHOTO CONTRIBUTED BY MIKE HICKEY Mike Hickey (with hat), posing with the CCC cross-country squad, received two NWAACC Coach of the Year awards last week. Hickey coached the Cougars to the NWAACC combined cross-country championship last November. fame. Hodges is partly responsible for the successful coach that Hickey is today. As a high school student, Hickey only had medio cre grades, but Hodges helped him improve as both a student and athlete. For that, Hickey is grate ful. “He is a great man. He really helped me develop as an adult,” said Hickey. “I really owe him a lot.” It was also the years that Hickey spent under Hodges that he learned the importance of a good team environment. “From that point, I started to re alize that the culture of a team is very important,” said Hickey. “You need to create a confident environ ment in which people are positive and they believe in themselves and their teammates.” Teamwork is especially impor tant to Hickey. Contrary to what people may think, track is a team sport. And that is one thing that he is trying to push. “It’s not an individual sport.. .if you’re in a running program where it’s an individual sport, you’re re ally missing out on a big part of running,” said Hickey. “It’s a thing where every single person on a team effects every other person.” Clackamas’ cross-country team’s performance at NWAACC reflects Hickey’s coaching ability and well- deserved honor. “I think we had such a huge meet at championships ...I wasn’t sur prised to win one of them,” said Hickey. “But I was surprised to win both.” Hickey wasn’t the only person who was surprised. Other people in the conference were as well. But that’s the way Hickey likes it. “I’ve always been a guy that likes to be underrated,” said Hickey. “No one expected us to repeat, and it was great.. .my whole approach is to show everyone that we are the best.” 50-year old company with over 400 locations nationally has part time openings in customer service & retail $12-15.00 base-appt.
