A&E _______________ L TI he CI ac I camas P rint WEÓNEsdAy, FebRUARy 28, 2001 Antigone: a tragedy or only agony? DAISY BAIN Staff Writer Antigone's burial ritual for Polynices in Antigone is now play ing at the Portland Cen ter Stage until March 18. Should you go to see it? Maybe you should sit back and read this article and decide for yourself. This Greek tragedy begins after a bloody civil war where Antigone and her sis ter Ismene are the only survivors of a cursed family. Their brothers, Polynices and Eteocles, have killed each other during the war fighting on oppo site sides. Their uncle has be come the new king by default, and has or dered Eteocles to be buried as a hero and Polynices to get no burial as a sign of disgrace for not fighting for him. He ordered it forbidden, with death as the consequence, to bury him. This is where Antigone gets very mad and willfully disobeys the or ders of the king by burying her brother. She gets caught and is sen tenced to death. Now you would think that this sounds like an ok play, right? Well, in my opinion, the story idea is great. The play also includes a bit of incest and some nudity. In fact, I thought the girl who played the sis ter was absolutely hilarious. Being nude while delivering the humor was a good touch to accent the comedy, however, I didn’t like the perfor mance. There were some very confusing moments in the play for me. Such as, every ten minutes or so, the ac tors would stop what they were do ing and chant something in unison. The king's son Haemon (Michael A. Newcomer) urges Antigone (Christina DeLaine) to become his lover. Also, they had all of the actors on stage at all times. So while the main event was going on, you also could see what everybody else was do ing. To me, this just made every thing appear very busy. Too much was going on and it made it very hard to follow why everything was happening. I would give the play two thumbs down. The plot was good, but I think they could have made more impact on the audience if they kept it simple and to the point. But don’t take my word for it. Go and see the play for yourself. You just might understand it all better than I could. - K <= -A. t ■ •rz'S* ’v» By Chris LundareiT^ Aries: Today you are in for a real treat.
