A&E _______________ L WEÓNEsdAy, N ovevmer 15, 2000 TM e CI ac I camas P rìnt Pauling exhibit displays various styles, mediums MATTSHEMPERT StaffWriter The Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) is presenting an exhibit by members of its faculty, and they will be displayed in Pauling through Dec. 8 of this year. The exhibit consists of art by 27 different faculty artists. The event showcases the different styles of the college’s art faculty. “So each of their artists repre sents their own... that piece rep resents their style,” said Rick True, art department chair. The pieces range from acrylic painting to sculptures and prints, with styles as diverse as their media. The gallery features quite varying pieces, like the very photorealistic 12 Interpretations of the Self II; Ideo gram, a representational painting and A Mortal Bed, a visually literal, but conceptually abstract conte, which is a kind of hard crayon made of graphite and clay. It includes such artists as sculptor Bill Moore and painter Paul Missal, with each artist hav ing one or two pieces on display. PNCA has grown to be a well- known and respected college overits 100 years of teaching. Ac cording to True, a lot of the best art instructors in the area teach there. This event is to promote inter est in the PNCA and showcase their instructors’ ability, since some students go there after they complete their training at Clackamas In the future, True plans to have other colleges, such as Lewis and Clark of Marylhurst, exhibited at Clackamas. Bill Moore wood sculptor lectures on campus DIANA SCRIVNER Editor-in-Cheif Bill Moore, longtime Northwest wood sculptor and instructor at Pa cific Northwest College of the Arts (PNWCA), shared his artwork and tips with 40 students and commu nity members last Wednesday in the art building. Moore presented a slide show of his work and talked about his pas sion for art. He explained his back ground and how he incorporates metals into his wood sculptures. He also answered questions from the audience. Moore began working with wood more than 20 years ago, after mov ing to Oregon from Michigan. Cher- ish life, while holding it lightly, live the years he has changed his styles and working habits. “I used to always draw out my things,” he explained. “Nowthere’s a dialogue between me and the wood. Now I buy big forms of wood (called burrows), I look at it and see what 1 can use it for.” Moore uses various woods, in cluding maple, satin wood, oak, and black walnut, and he tries to get the most out of every piece. After work ing with wood for a number of years, Moore began to look for an other medium to enhance his wood sculptures. “I was hunting and hunting for a companion that would go with my wood,” he explained. Moore teaches figure sculpting and drawing at PNWCA and has sold some of his work to the state of Oregon as well as private collectors. He has been exhibited in shows look selfless or selfish?
