Wednesday, May 7,1997 Environmental audit measures campus trash CATHY ANDREW Contributing Writer The environmental club recently conducted an audit of the trash accumulated during one business day at Clackamas to evaluate the college's recycling program. Data was tabulated from the weight and volume of 24-hours of garbage generated on Wednesday» April 30. A full report will be available today in CC140; There are various types of material going out as solid waste, each day. The focus of the audit is to help determine how much trash can be recycled, and how much the college could save in the process. According to Plant Services, the college spends around $7,000 on garbage disposal monthly. The data from the audit indicated the cost of disposal could be cut by 30 percent with very minor improvements. Wednesday was chosen because of the number of students on campus and the volume of garbage. A full attempt was made to conduct the audit in a scientific manner for credibility, according to HEEL. WTiat led to a full-blown audit? October 1995, HEEL started working to increase recycling on campus. January 1996, the college switched from “virgin” white paper to a 100 percent recycled “unity” paper (which now makes up 85 percent of paper use). April. 1, 1996, a proclamation was made by Plant Services to increase recycling by placing bins throughout the campus. November 22,1996, after, (according to HEEL) "no viable results," a student protest was made. This led to the creation of the recycling task force. The task force has been meeting biweekly since December 6,1996. January 1997, a Recycling Assistant Work Study position was created. The task force assigned tasks where needed, in order to get bins and a recycling company. HEEL was told nothing would move forward unless an audit was don'e. There is only one step left in setting up a recycling program: choosing a company who will give the college the best return for the recyclable materials generated on campus. In the future, HEEL states "the college will not have to do a full-blown audit. The data will be available from the amount going out in the recycling bins. The material already recycled was not included in the audit. This means the college stands to gain more revenue."
