The Clackamas Print^T M---------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wednesday, May 1,1996 / Softball excels: winning 24 out of 26 Brendon Neal Opinion Editor Clackamas women’s softball went 3-1 over the weekend with wins over Southwestern Commu nity College (SWOCC) and Lower Columbia CC. On Friday the Cougars played a doubleheader at home against SWOCC. The game was expected to be a rain out but started on time after four hours of field preparation. Clackamas won the first game 4-1 in 10 innings. Head Coach Paul Fiskum felt the Cougars weren’t as ready as they normally are. “We didn’t have our best day. We weren’t as mentally sharp as we have been most of this year,” said Fiskum. The score was tied 1-1 until the tenth inning. The Cougars won the game in the bottom of the tenth inning with a three-run homer by Lisa Gander. Robin Voil went 3-5 includ ing a single, double and a triple, including a run in the fifth inning. Lisa Gander went 4 of 5 includ ing two singles, a double and a home run. Robin Lisak pitched the first game. She gave up one run, al lowed only eight base hits and struck out five players. Lisak’s record went 10-0. Clackamas lost the second game 6-2 against SWOCC. The Cougars went 2-0 in the first inning but were unable to score in the final six innings. “This is the game where we just didn’t feel we were very sharp. We just couldn’t get any thing going,” explained Fiskum. “We made a couple of critical er rors in big innings.” Kriss Demos went 2-3 and Denise Haselwood got a double and 2 RBIs. Gander pitched the game which was her first loss, giving her a record of 5-1. On Sunday the Cougars played a doubleheader against Lower Columbia College at Clackamas. Clackamas had no errors in the two games.The Cou gars won the first game 1-0. Denise Haselwood had the only run of the game on a single by Demos in the second inning. Lisak pitched a nearly perfect game with one base hit by LCCC. “Robin Lisak pitched her best game,” said Fiskum. The Cougars went on to win the second game 8-2. In the third inning Clacka mas got six runs on four base hits. Lisa Gander got 3 RBIs on a home run. Scott went 3-4 with 2 RBIs. Bile and Menzia added a RBI apiece. Fiskum felt that staying fo cused was very important during bad weather and other distrac tions. “It was a hard week be cause of all the rain, to stay fo cused,” Fiskum said. “Defense has stayed sharp... one of the harder things to do when practicing indoors,” added Fiskum. Brenda Ruppel, who has sat out the last 10 games because of an injury, hopes to return on Fri day against South Puget Sound. Cougar Baseball team first in league Lora Wahrgren Sports Editor Two outstanding wins last Saturday against Lane College put the Cougar baseball team in first place. Jason Mann and Chris Schilling both performed well. They were credited with three hits in their respective four at bats in the first game. Mann had one RBI and scored two men. Schilling scored two runs as well. Pitcher Justin Duling allowed Lane only one hit in seven in nings. Donal McGavran finished them off in the last two innings by permitting Lane only two hits. The Cougars exacted 11 total hits in the first game. “We think it was a great ball game,” said Head Coach Robin Robinson. The final score of 9-1 declared the Cougars the winners over the Lane Titans. In the second game of the doubleheader, Clackamas took an early lead with a run in both the first and second innings. By the third inning the score was Lane over the Cougars 3-2. The sixth inning broke open with Jeremy Mann hitting a solo home run to tie the score 3-3. Jeff Boen got on base with a walk. J.D. Bigalow stepped up and got a base hit. The Cougars designated hit ter, Jason Gillespie, blasted a triple and scored two. Brad Tay lor singled in Gillespie to make the score 6-3. Jeremy Hubbard wrapped up the inning by singling in Taylor to give the Cougars their second win of the day. The final score of 7-3, moved the Cougars into first place in the league stand ings. On Sunday the Cougars trav eled to Salem to play Chemeketa Chiefs, and lost 3-7. “We didn’t play a bad ball game, they just played well. Our pitching didn’t do well enough to win,” said Robinson. The Cougars,had three hits total for the game. The Cougars’ next game is tomorrow at Mt.
