Full of deliciously funny dialogue and broad slap stick, the film is a hilarious mix of ribald comedy, social commen tary, and dysfunctional family drama. Writer/director David 0. Russell tosses in the same jaded, sardonic humor that peppered his 1993 debut feature “Spanking the Monkey”, but deals with much less controversial subject matter this time around. Comedian Ben Stiller stars as Mel Coplin, a man who finds out he was adopted when he was a young child. His adoptive parents are Mary Tyler Moore and George Segal, both overbearing and neurotic. Mel and his wife Nancy (played by Patricia Arquette) are having their own problems as Mel has been entirely disinterested in sex since the birth of.their child. They decide that the best thing to do is to track down Mel’s biological parents, much to the dismay of Moore and Segal. Guiding them along the way is Tina (played by Tea Leoni of “Bad Boys” and TV’s “The Na ked Truth”), a social worker from the agency that sent Mel to the Coplins. Along the way, they run into many misadventures with often hilarious results. Their search leads them to a couple (played by Lily Tomlin and Alan Alda) who may or may not be Mel’s biological parents. As they get to know each other, Mel and Tina become attracted to each other, like magnets, and Nancy searches for the love she is being denied with Mel. The film, which was shot by Portland cinematograpgher Eric Edwards (“To Die For”, “My Own Private Idaho”, is uproariously funny from beginning to end, even when dealing with touchy topics such as adoption and mari tal infidelity. All of the actors are wonderful, with a special nod to Stiller, who mixes smug, smart aleck remarks with Buster Keaton-ish physical pratfalls bril liantly. The real treat of the film is the supporting players includ ing Moore, Segal, Alda, and Tomlin, all of which turn in their best work in years. “Flirting With Disaster” isn’t for everybody, but if you like your humor on the wild side, it’s a sure thing.
