Diversity Plan sparks emotional response at college forum by Christi Snavely Opinion Editor Diversity was the subject at last Thursday’s forum and diversity is what attendants got. The forum was held by Joe Uris in an effort to provide infor mation and awareness of the sub ject to the forefront It allowed con- cemed parties to voice their percep tions and ask questions about the Diversity Plan. The plan is the result of efforts by members of the Gender and Eth nic Equity committee, President’s Council (representatives of classi fied, students, faculty and deans) and consultants from Western In A/ Students interested in Western Or egon State College are invited to attend a mini-open house from 12:30 to 4 p.m., Friday, at the WOSC campus. Epstein speaks his mind during the heated debate about the proposed college Diversity Plan. * Establish a diversity advisory committee that includes commu nity, administration, faculty, clas sified, and students. The goal of the committee is to: a) Involve ASG and student par ticipation in all phases b) Increase minority student re cruitment c) Increase graduation rate of mi norities d) Investigate topics of exchange with other institutions for faculty and students Strategies: Recruit minority com munity leaders and students to work with staff on advisory com mittee to develop recruitment, aca demic, and social support programs.(Student Services track ing, High School Relations; exist ing agency and community part nerships, etc.) Goal 2 - Student Success and Di versity * Identify and/or develop at least 10 courses with diversity con tent a) clarify/define criteria for “di versity content” b) Examine existing courses for current “diversity content” and compile a list of current classes which address the issue of diver sity (department level) c) Contact other institutions for courses and content in such courses which demonstrate/sat- isfy/fulfill/address issues of diver sity (department and division lev els) d) Investigate the possibility/re- quirement of one “diversity con tent” class in all AA degrees and certificates and determine the most efficient method of this inclusion (Curriculum Committee, Instruc tional Council, and department Continued on page 2 The Portland Women’s Crisis Line needs female volunteers who want to help end domestic and sexual violence, as well as help victims and survivors of such vio lence. The college is required to do (and does have) an established Af firmative Action Plan. The diver sity plan in question is a supplement of this program, and is not a man datory policy requirement. Most of the participants rep resented the anti-diversity plan side and voiced concern about the plans validity. The following is a copy of the Revised Diversity Plan, dated March 7,1995. To obtain your own copy of the Plan contact ASG: The following diversity plan addresses three issues: campus and community involvement, stu dent success and diversity, and staff diversity. Included in this document are the rationale, his tory, data, definitions, and visions for the diversity plan. Each of the following goals and strategies is to be considered a work-in- progress and subject to revision and updating as deemed neces sary.
