SPORTS Page 12 Curran’s Corner by Christopher Curran Deslgn/Sports Editor Clackamas Community College Beiser continues athletic career by Christopher Curran Design/Sports Editor ____ “It was always real natural to be in sports,” states Niki Beiser, a second year volleyball player. Beiser, 19, was involved in volleyball, basketball, and soft ball last year at Clackamas, but said she would be playing only volleyball and softball this year. She is team captain of Kathie Woods’s volleyball team at the college. Beiser originally started play Nobody understands Being a sports fan, and grow ing up with two sisters who are non-sports-fans, quickly became a conflict of interest in the house. One of the largest problems for the fan is when the non-fan just can’t understand what the fan is interested in. There is no single answer to that question. For example, some enjoy basketball for its constant action, some appreciate baseball for the anticipation in provides, and some are thrilled by the the phone or by doing noisy household chores such as vacuuming. Even more annoying is the non-fan who breaks into the game to ask patronizing ques tions about how it is played. Each sport has its certain something that fans identify it with. Nobody, as they are getting ready to watch “Monday Night Baseball,” wants to turn to so meone and explain for 30 minutes what makes baseball different from any other sport. There are those who say that your favorite sport reflects your personality. For proof of that idea all you have to do is tune your television into professional wrestling. Those guys are a lit tle, shall we say high strung. Sometimes, in protest; non fans (traditionally females for some reason) annoy the fan who is perched at his recliner wat ching “the big game.” This is done sometimes by talking on waste the fan’s time pretending that he/she is interested. The sports fan has always known what he knows about ■most sports. Boxing is not what I would call my favorite sport, but I am interested in some of the contests. Of course, I was never able to explain the reasons why those two sweaty men beat on each other until I told her how much money Sugar Ray Leonard made in the Hagler fight. Being a fan is not easy, I’m still trying to tell my sister why some football players slap each other’s rear end when the play is over. The question came to me dur ing last season. Beiser feels that this year’s volleyball team is “one hundred percent better than last year...Everyone has the desire to win. I think we’ll peak now.” At North Marion High School “I was a sophomore and played (volleyball) mostly with seniors,” Beiser explains. She said that from that experience she was able to learn a lot from the older players. “It (high school volleyball) is not as competitive as now,” Beiser says. She played varsity volleyball her sophomore through senior years at North Marion and was named all-league her junior year. On the basketball team last year at Clackamas, Beiser averag ed 5.8 points per game, claimed 40 rebounds, and passed out 30 assists. In high school she played basketball her sophomore through senior years. During the softball season last year at the college, Beiser’s main position was as one of the team’s pitchers. She played on the North Marion varsity team all four years in high school. Her original goal is to enter the personnel aspect of business. She says that a dream is to go into hotel management in Hawaii. Beiser says that while growing up her family life was very close. “My brothers (ages 20 and 22) and I used to fight, but now we get along well.” Beiser has lived in Aurora all her life. She feels that Clackamas volleyball coach Kathie Woods is “the best coach I’ve ever had. She’s determined, disciplined, en couraging, and supportive.” “Jose’ (assistant coach Jose’ Navarajo) is a great help to our team I have him to look up to.” Navarajo has played volleyball in Costa Rica, played, and later coached at Willamette Universi ty. r For Sale FOR SALE: Thunderbolt Kayak, medium-volume, fiberglass, floatation bag and spray skirt-included. $350 OBO.
