SPORTS October 28, 1987 Sports off Campus Ski Club seeks members by Christopher Curran Design/Sports Editor By Jerry Ulmer Staff writer Canby tunes up on Milwaukie Hometown Canby delighted their homecoming crowd Friday night, as the Cougars used their powerful ground game to chew up Milwaukie 21-6. The victory set up an expected showdown this Friday at Canby with fellow unbeaten and number one rank ed - Lakeridge that will likely determine the Three Rivers League champion. Canby, 6-0 in league, established its running game on their opening drive as they pounded 59 yards in eight plays to take a 7-0 lead on Brian Mclrvin’s five yard run. That score stood at half, with Milwaukie’s best scoring chance getting foiled when a march ended at the Canby 15 and Jim Hutchinson missed a 32 yard field goal midway through the second quarter. The Cougars got a big break with 9:03 left in the third quarter. Ryan Little blocked a Milwaukie punt, setting up Canby at the Mustangs’ 21. The number two ranked Cougars then jammed it down the defense’s throat, with Doug Mootz performing the Heimlich Manuever on a one yard TD run on fourth down to make it 14-0. Milwaukie’s lone bright spot came three minutes later when Dave McLaughlin caught an An dy Davies pass behind the line of scrimmage, then turned and un coiled a beautiful 51 yard bomb to Mark Moody for a touchdown. The extra point fail ed, making it 14-6. If Milwaukie gained any momentum from their score, it went on vacation on the ensuing kickoff as Doug Mootz split the coverage up the middle and out- sprinted the kicker down the sidelines for a 92 yard TD return that capped the scoring at 21-6. All that remained was for Can by to pad their rushing stats. Their balance was most im pressive, with five players rushing for 25 yards or more. The Cougars ran up 199 yards rushing on 47 carries, choosing to throw only five times. The loss dropped Milwaukie to 3-3 in league and into a fifth place Page 11 tie with Clackamas. Putnam holds fourth place, the league’s final playoff spot, with a 4-3 mark. Next week Milwaukie plays at Clackamas. THINGS TO WATCH - Can by’s wonderful ground game has translated into an inability to throw, which will hurt them against Lakeridge. While their rushing is very strong, it is not ex plosive and doesn’t have a back with breakaway speed. Also, the Lakeridge secondary is very quick. The Canby defense has shown a vulnerability to the long ball,' something Lakeridge does well. Look for a Lakeridge win, something like 24-14. Milwaukie sophomore Dave McLaughlin has a fantastic arm. The 6’1” 165-pounder played the final series at quarterback Friday and launched some impressive bombs that fell incomplete, travelling some 50 yards in the air. Look for him to standout in future years. Canby’s Doug Mootz. scored two touchdowns Friday, giving him six in two weeks. BILLY “JACK” HAYNES “We need a minimum of 25 people per outing to get group rates,” stated ski club advisor Mark Essig as he prepares to lead more and more skiers up to the slopes this winter. Essig, who is in his fourth year as advisor of the ski club, said that the club is open to anyone who wants to join, whether they’re on or off cam pus. The club is working on ob taining discounts on clothing and equipment from a number of vendors. A major discount will come from Ski Bowl. The group is also working with Mir ror Mountain and Mt. Hood Meadows. According to Essig, the club could take as many as 15 to 20 trips this winter. Those 15 to 20 outings in clude two ski bowls at Mt. Hood Meadows. Only Clackamas ski club members will receive the discount rates. Applications to sign up for the team are located in the Stu dent Activities Office in the Community Center. There will be a membership meeting sometime in November (watch for details in “The Print”). In the meantime, anyone with questions should call Essig here at the college at ext. 511.
