Sports Season Begins Grapplers host wrestling tournament The wrestling season has of ficially begun with the starting of the winter term as Clackamas hosted a wrestling tournament last weekend. There were 12 colleges par ticipating in the tournament. Nationally ranked North Idaho, Pacific University, Pacific Lutheran, Oregon State University, University of Oregon, South Western Oregon CC, Linfield College, Portland State University, Southern Oregon CC, Highline CC, Centralia CC and of course, Clackamas were all here for the wrestle off. North Idaho took home the Championship trophy beating the second place school, Pacific University, by a point spread of 90 to 47. The third place trophy went to Centralia Washington who had 28 points. Clackamas’ very own Chuck Calhoun placed second in his weight division, beating Chuck Ashmuhs, who had previously held the number one spot. “I feel Chuck Calhoun did an excellent job,” said Head Coach Norm Berny. Berny stated that he was pleased with the overall results of the tournament, though he added that he was a little disappointed because five of his starters were out because of injuries. “We didn’t enter anyone who we didn’t feel could compete at their highest level,” Berny said. Juan Ybarra was out due to an ankle injury, Lazzarro Ybarra with, a neck injury, Doug Harper had strep throat, Kris Tellegen pulled a groin muscle and Jeff Seaney was out with a knee injury. “I was pleased with the tournament and the competition. I didn’t feel we were really represented, we only had a few out and our freshman wrestled against juniors and seniors,” Berny said, “but weren’t out to win after all the injuries.” Berney also added that the year was off to a good start, George McPhail gathers points during tournament. Intramural News During the long months of winter term, if you don’t want to go skiing because it is either too far or too expensive, don’t fret because there is another way to get some excercise and have fun doing it. All students and faculty members are in vited to participate in the Col lege’s intramural sports and recreational activities. The activities for winter term at the college include “Three on Three” Coed Volleyball, “Five on Five” Basketball, Coed Badminton, Coed Racquetball, and of course thé everfun Fun-Runs. Basketball deadline is Jan. 17. Please Volleyball If you are interested in play ing “Five on Five” Basketball, leave a number where you can be reached or where a message may be left. On Feb. 5, starting at 2 p.m. there will be an all day volleyball tournament ending at 5 p.m. The teams must be coed and there cannot be more than two intercollegiate volleyball players per team. The deadline to sign up is Tuesday Feb. 4 by 2 p.m. Sign up on the Intramural bulletin board in Randall Hall, across from Kathie Woods’ office. have your name signed up on the intramural bulletin board by Jan. 17. Games will be played each Tuesday and Thursday at noon in the gym. But one small note, no inter collegiate players may com pete... Sorry! Badminton For those of you Coed Bad minton fiends, the sign up Raquetball Coed Racquetball will be played in a round robin tour nament at Eastside Athletic Club. In order to play in this event, and to use the facility, you must be enrolled in the racquetball class at the college. Fun-Runs scheduled for Winter term. The runs will be from two to four miles in length. The first will be on Thursday, Feb. 13 and the second will be on Thursday, Mar. 13. Both races will start at noon whether rain or shine and runners are to meet in front of the lower level of Randall Hall. T-Shirts will be awarded to the winning female and male winners.
