Sports Lady roundbailers down Umpqua 85-55 By Julie Miller Sports Editor When we were all visiting relatives and enjoying thé holidays, the lady Cougar basketball team was playing . game after game, both on the road and at home. Just before school was out last term, the team played Western Oregon State College here at Clackamas and beat them 61-40 in regulation time play. Just three days later they wiped out Centralia CC 77-47 in another home victory. On Dec. 14, the Cougs pushed Walla Walla CC off the court with a score of 63-55 and then in their last home game for a couple of weeks, the team shut out Olympic CC 62-45. But the team’s winning streak was short lived as they lost to Walla Walla CC in Walla Walla. On -the weekend of Dec. 27 and 28, the team went down to sunny California to compete in the Shasta Tournament. The team took placed first to bring home the Championship trophy. “These were close “They weren't very good ball clubs, no matter how poorly we played we knew we could win.” games so they were good wins,” said Assistant Coach Jim Hill. On Jan. 4, the team played Mt. Hood CC and clearly dominated them by winning the game 72-55. Two days after school resumed, the team played Chemeketa and was shut out 61-49 on their home court. According to Hill, the team pretty much knew which games they were going to win. “They weren’t very good ball clubs, no matter how poorly we played we knew we could win. Chemeketa is a good team. They will probably end up one of the top three teams in league. They play good defense so we couldn’t get it going. They denied us the ball. Most of the points we got were from fast breaks”? In recent action, Clackamas downed Umpqua CC 85-55 and then lost one to Southwestern CC 43-42. Head Coach Phil Garver said, “It was not very good team basketball emotionally. They have no confidence, they’re letting it get them down. We had total control (over SWOCC), but they just kind of blew it.” Then added, “But, it’s still early in the season, were only 2-2 in league, there is a lot more games to play. We’ll be alright.” Patty Mattis (13) puts ball in for two during recent game. Photos by Dan Wheeler Cougs’ beat Umpqua with last second shot By Julie Miller Sports Editor After coming back from Christmas vacation, the Men’s Basketball team didn’t waste any time going for the gold as they went through two nights of overtime games last weekend. Clackamas played and beat Umpqua CC in double overtime by a score of 66-64 and then lost to Southwestern CC (SWOCC) in overtime the next night 94-93. Both of the games were decided at the buzzer. On Friday night. Ump qua missed a shot with seven seconds left, giving the ball to Jeff Richards, who drove, in what Assistant Coach Paul Fiskum called, “an awesome drive,” around three defenders to put the ball in on the buzzer. “We played real bad Friday night. The kids were tired after the emotional win over Chemeketa. We couldn’t January 14, 1986 shoot, they just weren’t fall ing. We executed our offense, we just couldn’t hit,” Fiskum said. “In the last minute of regulation play the kids played every play to put us into over time. We were down by five points when Mark Courtney hit a rebound, then Ed Holford Hit a jumpshot and Mark Steger got fouled and buried themboth. No rim, just net. That put us into overtime.” he added. In the first overtime, both teams scored two points tying it up for the second overtime. In the second overtime, Clackamas outscored Umpqua 6-4 to win the game, a game Coach Fiskum said the team was very fortunate to win. The next night the team went down to Coos Bay and lost a double overtime game against South Western CC (SWOCC). According to Fiskum, the team played much better the second night, but he added that, “We let them have easy shots in the first half. Things were going well, but for about the last eight minutes before halftime we didn’t play defense. We let them get every shot they wanted, so then we were behind by four points at halftime.” In the second half the team came out and played well and according to Fiskum, shot 50 percent. Over the holidays the col lege played three games at the Walla Walla Tournament, winning only one. Then they added a win from Seattle University J.V. because of forfeit, due to fog. They beat Walla Walla CC here at Clackamas three days before Christmas by a score of 77-71. Head Coach Royce Kiser com mented on that game saying, “We came back in the second half to beat them. We seemed to put it all together.” Jeff Richards (22) passes off to a teammate during a recent game. Page 7
